Question ID: 144976
I am giving a presentation shortly to a group of realtors about how
they can use technology to be more effective in their business. I am
looking for some *specific* examples of web services, computer
software, and wireless services for realtors. (By specific, I mean
more than "Microsoft Outlook is good too", but rather custom Outlook
applications developed specifically for realtors, etc.)

Since this will be a PowerPoint presentation, it's very important that
all examples have screenshots and/or visual walkthroughs. The data
returned should make the case strongly that realtors can be more
effective by using the technology -- so stats, graphs, and case
histories are very helpful. (I'm mostly interested in tools for
individual realtors, not tools that manage shared realty offices.)

I'd love three or four specific examples each in these categories:
Taking Your Office On The Road, Organize Better Back At the Office,
and Marketing Yourself.

Hi! Thanks for the question.

-----------
Marketing Yourself:

There are a lot of different ways that software could help in the
marketing of realty firms. One way is to provide an online presence.
The Realty Manager could be use to easily make websites specifically
for realtors.

A new technique is to put yourself on the PDA buying guides that your
clients could download for free at your own website.

You could also use real estate newsletter services so as to make a
customize newsletter for your company’s email campaign.

Another way is to do it the old fashion way but using new technology.

Instead of Outlook Express you could also use email software which
fits your work life. One such product is Group Mail.

Our next links will pertain to statistics and some charts that you
could also use in your presentation. So as to save you time I will
provide snippets from some of the articles but I highly suggest that
you read them in their entirety.

“It's no surprise to learn that the single most popular gadget with
real estate practitioners is the cell phone. The overwhelming majority
of respondents, 94.8 percent, now take and make calls with a cell
phone. That's significantly higher than the national average among
Americans of 33.7 percent.”

“Internet access is by far the most popular use of computers for real
estate professionals; 88.1 percent of respondents have Internet access
at work. Approximately, 78 percent reported going online to obtain
information on real estate in the month prior to the survey,. Another
popular online activity for real estate practitioners is e-mail, with
68.8 percent using it at work and 85.4 percent at home.”

“Surprisingly, less than a third of real estate pros, 29.9 percent,
currently use contact management software.”

“Perhaps the most startling finding was that handhelds/PDAs, promoted
as a perfect productivity solution for anyone who spends time away
from the office, are only carried by 10.4 percent of respondents.”

“Tech Use Up, But Adoption Lags”
http://www.realtormag.com/rmomag.nsf/pages/techwatch200108202

A guideline that is slowly getting popular in the real estate industry
is the Internet Data Exchange or IDX. It enables brokers to
participate in multiple listings (MLS) so as to advertise their
websites. Here is the result of the survey by the REALTOR
organization.

“Of interest is the fact that 21 percent of respondents provided IDX
solutions without offering a Web site, and 30 percent of those that do
offer a Web site did not provide an Internet search mechanism, but
said they plan to in the future.”

“Of the 40 survey respondents, which included MLS organizations and
boards of Realtors of various sizes, close to 100 percent of available
listings were published within a year of implementation. According to
the report's findings, this dispelled the myth that only larger boards
could afford to implement IDX solutions. Four out of 30 respondents
(not all respondents included MLS participation numbers) were
classified as small MLSs with less than 1000 listings. Seventeen out
of 30 contained less than 5000 listings, while 13 had over 5000
listings.”

“The most significant finding was the widespread adoption of Broker
Reciprocity by board members. Over 88 percent of respondents reported
that they had 95 percent of listings available through IDX, and the
NAR expects those numbers to improve.”

REALTORS also has a survey on the adoption rates of current
technologies by realty firms.

Easterangel,

Thanks for this. The PDFs and research was great, but the links to the
technology in those three categories hasn't quite hit the mark yet.
It's important that these be new and innovative technologies with
screen-shots suitable for presentation.

Only half of the links you provided have screen-shots and many of them
are similar takes on the same idea -- organizers. I'm hoping for
technologies with more of a WOW factor that it's clear when presented
that it's perfect for realtors. For instance, Act 6.0 can be
customized to, in two clicks, make a property flyer.

Could you take another whack at those categories?

Hi again! Thanks for asking a clarification before making a rating.
Here are some more tools I found that could meet your criteria.

Mobile Tools:

Another tool aside from PDAs would be a portable printer and HP has
the goods with its 450 mobile printer series.

HP 450
http://h50014.www5.hp.com/dj450/public/450index.shtml
http://h50014.www5.hp.com/dj450/public/bluetooth.shtml (Bluetooth
Capability)

http://h50014.www5.hp.com/dj450/public/dpof.shtml (Print Technology)

The following is a realtor’s review of the product.

You can also access map and MLS data on your PDA.

Mapopolis (View and download Maps)

(FAQ)

eKey ( A PDA synching application for SUPRA keyboxes)
http://www.supraekey.com/verticals/realestate/products/ekey/faqs.asp#_Software

-----------
Office Organization and Productivity Tools:

Another way to work better in the office is to try using the present
crop of text to speech software. According to Realtor.org that also
covers technology issues for realty firms, text to speech could be
great timesavers for realtors.

“For REALTORS® and association executives, text-to-speech applications
can be a valuable time saver and a convenient alternative to reading
information on computer screens. REALTORS® might catch up on the
latest industry news and trends by listening to articles downloaded to
their PDA or MP3 player while commuting or preparing for an open
house. Text-to-speech could also be used to help catch any mistakes in
a written proposal or other documents. Association leaders can listen
to a speech or other presentation they've prepared to get a better
idea of how their words will sound in front of an audience. Later, the
final written notes for the speech could be quickly converted to MP3
format and posted on a webpage along with its accompanying Powerpoint
presentation for members to access at their convenience.”

An example would be Fonix and its products.

VoiceCentral

Timetalk for PocketPC

Classic Trak-It (A client Management Software complete with
screenshots and guides)
http://telluridesoftware.com/indextraknew.htm

Asset Eye meanwhile is a powerful online and offline software
management for realtors. Take the virtual tour to get the screenshots
and step-by-step guide.

---------
In addition to the product and services I stated in my original
answer, other software could also help you in your marketing
campaigns.

One can use Virtual Tours in a realtor’s website so as to showcase the
homes in its property listings.

3d Photo Builder
http://www.anything3d.com/product/software/index.php3
http://www.anything3d.com/product/software/pic/ScreenShoot.jpg
(additional screenshot)

Hot Marketer (Animated Email Marketing Software)
http://www.topproducer.com/products/hotmarketer/sitepages/hmtour1.htm

You can also use call center software as a support for your marketing
campaign. Use this software for any inbound or outbound inquiry calls
captured by your campaign.

Advanced Call Center
http://www.voicecallcentral.com/advancedcallcenter.htm

I hope that this time I was able to come up with the products that you
need. In case you would require further information, please do not
hesitate to ask for another clarification.

Thanks!

Thanks for the nice rating and for the tip!
jhabley-ga rated this answer:4 out of 5 stars and gave an additional tip of: $5.00
Thanks very much! You found some very helpful links and responded
graciously and quickly with my request for additional work. Some
links were missing the "wow" factor I was looking for, but I recognize
this is subjective. Small tip included for your extra work.
