Hello, The Chicago Public Library has copies of every city "telephone" directory on microfilm from the 1880's thru current day. But there is a separate "city directory" that was produced. Upon a call to the library I was informed that these city directories go thru 1929 and after that they just don't seem to exist. The librarian there told me that perhaps the Chicago Historical Society has a few directories from the 50's but that is all. The type of information that you are requesting might require a "criss-cross" directory, that lists entries by address, which from what I remember was produced at various times in the 20's and 50' but not on a regular basis. Those are alos owned by the Chicago Historical Society. Sometimes these are called Polk Directories as well. |

I searched the University of Chicago Library Catalog at http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/ and it appears that Polk's directories also just go through 1929. The U of C's listings for Chicago directories may be read at http://ipac.lib.uchicago.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=ucpublic&uri=search=SL@!Chicago%20(Ill.)%20--%20Directories.&menu=search&submenu=basic_search#focus (I think that URL should work, but I could be wrong). Policies for access by non-University people are at http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/using/access/nonucusers.html. But since it doesn't go to the 40's, you'll probably want somewhere else. |
