My Windows 95 computer is having difficulty with Internet Explorer
5.5, SR-2. When I navigate certain sites (ebay, U.S. Government, to name
two), I cannot access certain parts of the site that should be
available. I click on a link to a different page and the only
response, if any, is a javascript line that appears in the lower left
of my screen or within the display of the web page. Can this problem
be fixed?

In IE, go to 'Tools' -> 'Internet Options' and click
on the 'Security' tab. What are your current settings
for the 'Internet' zone? Try resetting them to 'Default
level' with the button, or 'medium' with the slider,
and see if this doesn't fix the problem. Let me know
the results and we can proceed from there.

The security was set to a medium level, although not the default. I
reset to the default level and tried again to reach my test sites.
Still the same result.

Thanks for the clarification. Can you please right-click on
some links which are giving you a problem and select 'copy
shortcut' and paste them into a clarification here? This will
provide a better idea of exactly what function is not working.

On second thought, drag your ailing browser over to
Fred Langa's BrowserTune site and run it through the
tests there. Your browser's functionality will be
thoroughly tested, and fixes recommended (some can
be applied from the site):

Fred publishes a computer knowledge newsletter called
the LangaList. He knows his stuff, and knows who to
talk to for additional insight. His basic newsletter
is free, and you can browse or search the archives.
The LangaList homepage is here:

If BrowserTune doesn't result in a fix for your problem,
please do not rate this answer until you are satisfied that
the answer cannot be improved upon by means of a dialog
established through the "Request for Clarification" process.

BrowserTune and its linked site, PC Pitstop, are a treasure. The
analysis took some time but their diagnostics and repairs seem to have
fixed all my problems. Thank you!
