Hi pjmulberry, Good day and thanks for your question. The three flags that are raised at the closing ceremony of the Olympic games are : * The flag of the International Olympic Committee, * The flag of the host nation * The flag of the next host nation. This was introduced in the 1924 Paris Olympics Source :: http://www.olympic.org/uk/games/past/index_uk.asp?OLGT=1&OLGY=1924 If you have any clarifications, please don't hesitate to ask. Thank you for using this service and have a nice day Warm regards, aditya2k Search terms : olympic closing ceremony three flags |

I believe the correct answer to this question is: 1. The Greek flag 2. The flag of the host nation 3. The flag of the next host nation The Olympic flag is lowered, not hoisted, at the closing ceremony. |

phatstella, the above information was sourced from the "official" website of the Olympics. Secondly, the Olympic flag is lowered, but the answer says "International Olympic Committee" (IOC) flag, which is raised |

aditya2k, please refer to Bye-Law 2.3 of Rule 69 in the Olympic Charter: "The President of the IOC and the President of the OCOG mount the rostrum. To the sounds of the Greek national anthem, the Greek flag is hoisted on the flagpole that stands to the right of central flagpole used for the winners' flags. The flag of the host country is then hoisted on the central flagpole, while its anthem is played. Finally the flag of the host country of the next Olympic Games is hoisted on the lefthand flagpole to the strains of its anthem." You can find the complete text of the Olympic Charter on the official Olympics website at http://www.olympic.org/uk/utilities/reports/level2_uk.asp?HEAD2=26&HEAD1=10 Also, you should note that the IOC flag is the familiar five-ringed flag commonly referred to as "the Olympic flag." |

I e-mailed the IOC, and this is what they had to say: "With respect to your specific questions regarding the Greek flag and the Olympic flag we would begin by clarifying that these are two distinct flags - one being the flag of the IOC with the five ring symbol on a white background and the other being the flag for the country of Greece (blue and white in colour). "In the case of 1924 - and up until 1946 - the protocol, as stipulated in the Olympic Charter, did not include the raising of the Greek flag as part of the protocol we see it now specified in the current edition of the Olympic Charter which can be found at the following link: http://multimedia.olympic.org/pdf/en_report_122.pdf "In fact it is not until the 1949 edition of the Olympic Charter that we see a reference to the raising of the Greek flag being included as a part of the official protocol for the closing ceremonies." |
