Hello pjmulberry,

The film you are seeking is “Breakheart Pass”, which appeared in 1975
with Charles Bronson in the lead role. It was directed by Tom Gries
and is based on a book by Alistair MacLean.

Here is how I found the answer in my Google searches:

A search on “Governor Fairchild” provided one reference to a film in
which he is played by Richard Crenna. The film is Breakheart Pass.

A search on “Breakheart Pass” led me to a summary of the story:
“Bronson is John Deakin, a supposed thief and swindler who manages to
get himself arrested by U.S. Marshal Nathan Pearce played by Western
great Ben Johnson. Pearce and Deakin board a train carrying much
needed medical supplies and additional personnel to Fort Humboldt, an
outpost that has been stricken by diptheria. Also aboard the train
are the territory governor (Richard Crenna)…”

A search on “Breakheart Pass” and “engine” led me to a mailing list
posting about the film: “I’d like very much to know on which railroad
it was filmed, with the beautiful wood-burning locomotive #9…”
