for example recieve .AVI file at 400MB. I can convert that file to a
valid VCD format but it will be at the size 1GB., too big to put on
CD-R of 700MB. Any way
of changing the file before or after I do this conversion as I would
like to get some of these files to Disc.

Hello darnko,

This first bit is a bunch of info that I have put together to help you
understand some of the problems involved in finding solution for you.
If you are not interested in this, you can skip down to the section
that says “Working Solution Starts Here” to get started right away.
Now for our little discussion:

First of all, I need you to understand that an AVI file has a huge
amount of possible codecs that could be involved.

"The AVI file is a basically a wrapper that can contain a multitude of
different formats of video and audio. If you don't have the correct
codec installed on your PC, you will not be able to play any AVI that
makes use of that format but it is often not simple to figure out what
codec you need."
SOURCE: "Which Codec Does This AVI File Require?"
http://www.fourcc.org/fccwhich.htm

The above URL has a link to an application that can help you figure
out the codec that is used in the AVI file in question. I am assuming
that you already have the codec installed on your computer and that it
is a generic codec that conversion tools will be able to handle
without much hassle (because you have already converted it to an MPG!)

I do not know why you want to convert the file to vcd format, but I
suspect that it is because you would like to play it on a tv or other
display that cannot read avi. At this point, you need to understand
though that it is impossible to change the bitrate for the MPEG file,
or it will no longer be playable on your VCD player. “VCD is one
pre-defined MPEG-1 video stream that has 1150kbps (kilobits per
second) bitrate and that bitrate can't be changed or the MPEG-1 file
is not VCD compliant any more.”

The easiest way (and possibly the only way) we can convert the avi to
mpeg in a format that you can use is to split the avi, (or even better
the mpg) into two files, which will result in you burning two cds of
roughly 500mb each, or one that is 700ish and the other being
300mb-ish.

I need you to understand that there are several problems that we could
potentially run into if the program I have selected below is unable to
read your avi or mpg, and there is little that I can do to prevent
this without having the actual file to work with myself. If this
answer fails, you will need to tell me the audio and video codecs used
in the original file, and I will see if I can come up with a better
answer for you. Hopefully though, this answer will work:

There are several retail and shareware programs available to help you
accomplish this, but the one I choose to use for this walkthrough is
one that I have used and that I really like myself. You will have a
fully functional seven day free trial period before you pay the $19.95
registration fee. The program is easy to use, has a decent price, and
unlike others it will let you actually fully convert this file and
others in the 7-day trial period.

==== Working Solution Starts Here ====

Download the program here: http://doeasier.org/splitter/ (Easy Video
Splitter)

Basically, you have two choices. You can convert the avi file into 2
parts, or you can convert the finished vcd file into 2 parts. I
recommend that you do the second and convert the 1gb file into two
sections, the first one being 695 or so MB.

You will need to have the file to be split in a directory without any
long file names, I recommend that you drag it directly to your C:\ You
can now open up the program.

Where it says Source File, click on the little folder to the right and
find the file that you want to split. The file might start play, this
is normal and you can ignore it. Next select “Split the file
Automatically” and change the selection to: “Limit each clip to” and
put in 695 or 690. Click on Split and in a few seconds/minutes you
will have two files that you can burn to two cd’s. If you run into any
problems splitting the MPG, you can try splitting the AVI and then
converting those two files to MPG (split the avi in half though).

I hope that this information will be helpful to you and will provide
an acceptable solution. If you need any clarifications, please let me
know and I will do my best to further assist you.

First I must commend you on filling in alot of gaps I left open when I
posed this question. I do, and have been doing movie file encoding,
DVD ripping and ultimately and you guess it so I or We could watch as
a family through DVD player on the big screen. I have no problem with
a DVD to VCD exchange. Where my problem lies now and you guess it
again VCD for the big screen out of .avi files I've recieved over
time. With the Splitter you've shown me ,now with one half of the
movie being to large for a 700MB disc , after all is said and done and
I can split the File with what you've shown me, but say I have 2GB of
MPEG , is 700MB x 2 + 600MB=2GB Discs (3 Discs) possible. This would
not only involve splitting but as I see it," joining two smaller
segments", and this would be my ultimate goal. I've looked over the
Splitter but is there a part where two can be put as one.
Thanks so much for your time,
                                                Darren

If you have 1 file that is 2gb, you can use the method in the answer
and split up the file into three parts.

If you have 2gb worth of MPG (in two or more files) I recommend that
you join it all first, and then split it up again. You could also join
the AVI first and then convert to MPG and then split up.

I have some good news for you, if you liked the easy video splitter,
the exact same company has a program called "Easy Video Joiner" which
also comes with a free seven day trial. I have not tried this myself,
but it appears to work similar to the other program, except that it
joins files instead of splitting them.

The seven day trial download can be found here:
http://www.doeasier.org/joiner/downloads.html and the cost to register
this product is $19.95

You could also try this product (it is completely free):
http://download.com.com/3000-2194-10139663.html?tag=lst-0-3 CombiMovie
1.1 should be able to merge mpg files but it might be more difficult
to use.

I hope this followup is useful to you. Thank you for the tip. :)
