Dear celtic,
If you want, I could try locating your ancestors. I can't promise that
I will be successful, but I have solved quite a few genealogy
questions before. If you could provide information on your ancestor
(full name, dates of birth and death, place of birth, etc. - the more,
the better), I would do my best to find out more. If I fail locating
information, me and my Fellow Researchers still can tray to find a
genealogist.

I have spent a good bit of time researching these two ancesters as has
another member of the family. We have most of the information from
when they arrived in the USA but I want to know about their heritage
in Germany. Most of the documents are in german.
Katherine Elizabeth Ruhland Born 1836 ? of Schonstein,Churhessen
Germany. Married Gottfried (GOdfrey) Rebmann of Schonaich, Balingen,
Wurttemburg August 8 1859 in PHILADELPHIA, PA She Died November 21
1917 1706 Diamond St. Philadelphia. Buried at the West Laurel Hill
Cemetary Philadelphia, PA
Questions I want to ask are.
Katherine Elizabeth Ruhland her parentage and theirs as far
back as we can go. what their jobs were. I don't know whether she was
sent for by Godfrey Rebmann or supplied as a bride. Her brother's name
was Frederick Rebmann. I would like to know what ship she came over on
and were there others in her family that came. I have all the
ancesters I need for Godfrey Rebmann but would like to know what ship
he came over on. What his family did and he did in germany before he
came over. He was born Oct 12 1836 and came over 17 years later. I
know what he did in Philadelphia but I do not know anything but names
of his ancesters not what they did. He died March 20, 1897 at 1706
Diamond St. Philadelphia, Buried at the West Laurel Hill cemetary,
Philadelphia
I am writing an anecdotal history of the family that goes way beyong
geneology. I want to flesh it out so to speak. I have Godfrey
Rebmann's court statement of intent to become naturalized. Many thanks

Dear celtic,
A first search revealed no substantial new information. But it might
prove valuable for your own future research that the place names are
not correct. This might have caused problems in the past.
- Gottfried Rebmann's place of birth was, actually, Schönaich, a
village near the town of Böblingen in Württemberg (a kingdom in 1836,
a Federal Country of modern Germany today).
- Certainly more important: Katharine Elizabeth Ruhland's place of
birth was Schönstein in the former elector-principality of Kurhessen,
which is approximately the modern Federal Country of Hessen now. The
ö-Umlaut is important for identifying the place name in German. Also,
I suspect that her original first names might have been Katharina
Elisabeth, since that would be the more common German way of spelling
them.
A word to my Fellow Researchers: I will keep on working on this
question, but feel free to post an answer if you have results before
me.
Best regards,

Now I am completely confused the names you gave me are exactly the
same as the names I gave you unless you are giving me more modern
names. Beverly

I am sorry if you feel confused. Look, you will easily notice the
differences between the names you gave me and the correct spelling:
Schonstein -correctly-> Schönstein
Schonaich -correctly-> Schönaich
Wurttemburg -correctly-> Württemberg
You see the differences? The umlaut characters are important in
German, they are not only decoration. An "ö" is pronounced completely
different from an "o". Changing the "ö" to an "o" changes the whole
name.
Also, these are not more modern place names. The kingdom of
Württemberg has never been Wurttemberg.
Concerning Balingen: I have done further research. There is a place
called Balingen today. A small village, in the modern German Landkreis
(county) Böblingen, where also Schönaich is located. So I think that
Gottfried Rebmann was born in Schönaich near Balingen, county of
Böblingen, kingdom of Württemberg.
