Hello. Just to be sure I understand your question:

Are you looking for a comparison of all the shampoos you've had
researched here (Nizoral, J&J Baby Shampoo, etc.) to see which is the
most effective and the least harsh? Or is it something else you're
after? Please let me know at your convenience.

---------------------------------

Water: Most cosmetics and liquid shampoos contain water as the #1
ingredient. If they did not, the product would be too thick and
gelatinous to apply smoothly.

---------------------------------

Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate: These are surfactant
detergents which are commonly used in shampoos and cleaning products.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is an anionic detergent, while Sodium Laureth
Sulfate is an ethyloxylated detergent.

"Sodium Laureth Sulfate is used in high foaming dishwashing detergents
and many industrial cleaners. The physical properties of this
surfactant suggest many other applications such as shampoos, liquid
detergents, foaming agents, heavy duty alkaline cleaners, emulsifiers,
textile mill kier boiling bleach assistants, and neutral and alkaline
scouring. Foam stability in the presence of soap is much improved over
other anionics, therefore this product is recommended for cleaning
products containing soap as an ingredient."

Chemistry Store: Sodium Laureth Sulfate
http://www.chemistrystore.com/Sodium_laureth_sulfate.htm

"Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is useful in a wide variety of personal care
applications in which viscosity building and foam characteistics are
of importance. Because of its low salt content, this product is
particulary useful in formulations that ae sensitive to high levels of
sodium chloride. It is compatible with alkanolamides and amphoterics
so that maximum optimization of foam and viscosity characteristics can
be reached in the finished product. It can be incorporated into
shampoos, handsoaps, bath products, shaving creams and medicated
ointments. It is especially useful for opaque, pearlescent, or cream
products."

Cocamidopropyl Betaine is an amphoteric surfactant that serves as a
foam thickener. Like many surfactants, it is a coconut oil derivative.

"Used in shampoos, bubble baths and liquid handsoaps. Provides good
foaming and foam liquid stabilization with excellent wetting
properties. Compatible with anionic, cationic, and nonionic
surfactants."

Panthenol: This is a moisturizer and conditioner which is related to
Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5.)

"Panthenol acts as a penetrating moisturizer. Its humectant character
enables panthenol to hold water in the product or attract water from
the environment, resulting in a moisturizing effect. Panthenol imparts
a moisturizing and conditioning feel to skin care products. As a skin
softener it provides suppleness, and claims are that it also acts as
an anti-inflammatory agent."

---------------------------------

Vaccinium Myrtillus Extract: This is also known as Bilberry Extract.
It is an antioxidant astringent which may have antinflammatory
properties.

"Although bilberry constituents have multiple pharmacological actions,
most of the research has focused on the anthocyanosides. Extracts
containing anthocyanosides have been shown to possess strong
antioxidant properties,5 stabilize collagen fibers and promote
collagen biosynthesis,6-8 decrease capillary permeability and
fragility,9 and inhibit platelet aggregation.10 Anthocyanosides and
other bilberry leaf constituents prevent the release and synthesis of
pro-inflammatory compounds such as histamine, prostaglandins, and
leukotrienes."

Alternative Medicine Review: Vaccinium myrtillus (Bilberry)
http://www.thorne.com/altmedrev/bilberry6-5.html

"The medicinal properties of the fruits and leaves of Vaccinium
myrtillus have been known since the Middle Age since when the berries
have been utilised for their astringent, tonic and antiseptic
properties in the management of diarrhoea and dysentery, haemorrhoids,
gastrointestinal inflammations and mouth infections. The leaves have
also been used as a remedy for diabetes thanks to the hypoglycaemic
properties and their infusion or decoctions in the topical treatment
of eyes and mouth inflammation, skin infections and burns. Nowadays,
Bilberry (fruit) Extract, is commonly used to treat various eye
disorders and to promote general capillary health."

DHT(a hormone associated with hair loss.)

"Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA), Linoleic and
Oleic Acid are essential fatty acids found in plant oils. These fatty
acids have been individually proven to inhibit 5-Alpha Reductase. In
fact these are the most powerful inhibitors of 5-Alpha Reductase known
today and not only they inhibit the Type II form of the 5-Alpha
Reductase which other products like Propecia® inhibit, but also the
Type I form of the enzyme which is present in high concentrations in
the scalp, sebaceous glands, and the skin."

Alpha Linolenic Acid (LNA). Doctors around the world recognize EFA's
as essential nutrients for human health. The problem is that EFA's
aren't made in our bodies, so we have to eat them or take them as
supplements. Linoleic Acid is considered the most important EFA. It is
a necessity for hair health and growth. Without it, humans suffer from
hair loss and dry scaly scalp and skin."

Citric Acid: Adjusts the pH of the shampoo to help smoothe the hair. A
slightly acid pH is desirable so that the hair will be sleek and shiny
in appearance.

"Citric Acid... has a two fold reason for addition. Shampoos usually
are at pH 5.5 because at slightly acidic pH the scales on a hair
follicle lay flat making the hair feel smooth and look shiny. Citric
acid is used to adjust the pH down to 5.5 (ish). It is a fairly weak
acid which makes the adjustment easier. it also has a small amount of
preservative action. Citric acid as opposed to any other acid will
prevent bacterial growth."

These products are very similar. The "Replenishing" formula has
Dihydroxypropyl Peg 5 Linoleammonium Chloride in greater quantity than
the "Revitalizing" formula, and has relatively less Panthenol. It is
not possible to tell precisely how the amounts of these chemicals
differ, since the shampoo's manufacturer is not required to list exact
quantities of each ingredient.

What does it mean for a shampoo to have more Dihydroxypropyl Peg 5
Linoleammonium Chloride and less Panthenol? Basically, this would
indicate that the "Replenishing" formula has more anti-static power,
and less conditioning power than the "Revitalizing" formula. The
"Replenishing" shampoo might be better for a person with fine, wispy,
"fly-away" hair that needs body, but the "Revitalizing" formula would
be more suitable for a person whose hair is dry or brittle. I would
not call either of these products "mild," since both contain Sodium
Lauryl Sulfate (a surfactant often characterized as harsh,) but the
"Revitalizing" formula, with a larger portion of the excellent
moisturizer/skin softener Panthenol, is probably the best choice for
you, since moisture retention and scalp coniditioning are more
important to you than control.

I hope this will be helpful. My search strategy involved Web searches
with Google, FAST, Inktomi, and AllTheWeb search engines, using search
terms composed of the separate ingredients of the shampoos.

Please request clarification if you need further explanation, or if
any of the links do not function.

Best wishes,

i notice u ansered 2 of my questions!! i hope u dont think i am crazy
but this rogaine is killing my hair!! can u look at my previous
question and compare the clariol renewel 5x revitalize shampoo to the
infusium 23 shampo for "chemically treated hair" not for normal hair??
and every shampoo has sodium layerlth sulfate in it.

Per your request, I have added a comparison of the Clairol
"Revitalize" shampoo to the Infusium 23 Shampoo, Moisturizing Formula
for Color/Permed Hair to my earlier answer here:

http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=145986

I certainly don't think you're crazy; I have a friend who used Rogaine
until his painful, itchy scalp problems became more serious than his
hair loss problems. Rogaine seems to be a blessing for some, but a
nightmare for others. On the advice of his dermatologist, my friend
dropped the Rogaine entirely in favor of Nizoral shampoo (he is using
the prescription-only version with 2% ketoconazole.)
