Hello cgpete1-ga, and thank you for your historic question, and the
opportunity to answer it.

According to Senate historical records, the senator who replaced JFK
in 1960 was Benjamin A. Smith II (D). He served from 1960 to 1962,
then Ted Kennedy was elected to the post, and has served ever since.
Ted Kennedy is one of the longest serving Senators, with over 40 years
of service. I found the information here:
http://www.senate.gov/pagelayout/senators/one_item_and_teasers/massachusetts.htm

According to the "Political Graveyard" web site, Smith was the mayor
of Gloucester, Mass., 1954-55.

His son, Benjamin A. Smith III is an ice hockey coach, and coached the
US Women's Olympic Ice Hockey team at the 1998 and 2002 Olympic games.

I have been unable to find any other information on Smith's occupation
after he left the Senate. I'm trying to find a contact for his son, so
I can contact him and find out further information on his father's
occupation. When I find that information I will post this as a formal
answer. Thank you!

I found this additional information here:
http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=S000517

His official Senate biography notes he was active in the fishing
industry before his appointment to the Senate. He served as "president
of Merchants Box Factory, Cape Ann Fisheries, Inc., United Fisheries
Co., Gloucester By-Products, Inc., and Gloucester Community Pier
Association, Inc." They go on to say he "served until November 6,
1962; lived in Gloucester, Mass., until his death on September 6,
1991; interment in Calvary Cemetery."

You might want to contact the Gloucester Historical Archives
