anonymous,

Since pinkfreud is unable to answer your question due to some other
matters, I have had a look at this. I believe I answered your very
first question here on GA.
I am unable to find the ingredients for the Graham Webb Intensives
vivid color moisturizing shampoo.
However, I have come up with an ingredient list for Graham Webb
Intensives Super Silk Shampoo-Reconstructive Shampoo.
"This gentle cleansing and conditioning shampoo helps replenish dry,
brittle and chemically-treated hair with intense moisture and
flexibility. Formulated to leave hair soft, shiny and manageable with
a silky feel, this reconstruction shampoo contains ThermaCore Complex
with Silk to help restructure, strengthen and rebuild elasticity."
"This natural blend of silk proteins and unique, heat-activated,
conditioning and moisturizing agents imports intense shine while
improving hair's manageability and texture. Thermacore Complex with
silk helps repair damaged areas while restoring hair to optimum health
and condition.

If you are interested in having me compare this shampoo to the
Clairol Renewal 5x Revitalize, let me know.
If not, is there another shampoo or another aspect of the question
you would like to add instead?
Let me know and I will get right on it!

anonymous777-ga!

It is nice to answer a question for you again!

As I stated, at this point I am unable to find the ingredients for
the first shampoo you requested on the internet. If I happen by a
salon that sells the shampoo, I will jot down the ingredients and
answer that portion in a clarification. However, as per your
clarification, I will substitute the “Graham Webb Intensives Super
Silk Shampoo, Reconstructives Shampoo.”

Question #1

1.) Purified Water
    ****************
“This type of water has been produced by distillation,
deionization,
reverse osmosis, or other suitable processes and meets the
definition
of "purified water" in the United States Pharmacopoeia. Purified
water may
also be referred to as "demineralized water."

From “NSF Bottled Water Certification Program”. Consumer
Information

2.) Sodium Laureth Sulfate
     *******************
“Sodium Laureth Sulfate is used in high foaming dishwashing
detergents and
industrial cleaners. The physical properties of this surfactant
suggest
many other applications such as shampoos, liquid detergents,
foaming
agents, heavy duty alkaline cleaners, emulsifiers, textile mill
kier
boiling bleach assistants, and neutral and alkaline scouring. Foam
stability in the presence of soap is much improved over other
anionics,
therefore this product is recommended for cleaning products
containing soap
    as an ingredient.”

3.) Sesame Oil
     **********
“Known as the “Queen of Oils.”

“Sesame Seed Oil has been used as a healing oil for thousands of
years. It
is naturally antibacterial for common skin pathogens, such as
staphylococcus and streptococcus as well as common skin fungi,
such as
athlete's foot fungus. It is naturally antiviral. It is a natural
     anti inflammatory agent.”

“It helps sufferers of psoriasis and dry skin ailments. It
nourishes and
feeds the scalp to control dry scalp dandruff and to kill
dandruff causing
     bacteria.”

     From Youthing Strategies
     http://www.youthingstrategies.com/qualities.htm

4.) Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate
     **************************

irritation
     baby shampoo.”

     From The Purist.com – Cleansers
     http://www.purist.com.au/ingredients_clean.htm

5.) Soybean Oil
     **********
A natural oil derived from soybeans. Soybean oil has been shown
to soften
     skin.

“In 1996, an electrician wiring machinery at the Larsons’ plant
noticed
that his cracked and damaged skin was suddenly improving. “He
worked
outside in the winter, and you can’t strip wires wearing gloves,”
Cliff
says. “His hands were pretty bad.” Soon, others at the plant were
also
reporting softer skin. The reason: contact with soybean oil, Lucy
says. “It’s rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids that are
     beneficial to the skin.”

From “Soybeans Soothe the Skin.” AG Innovation News
     http://www.auri.org/news/ainapr99/04soysof.htm

“As you examine the ingredient list on a product, Look to see
where soybean
oil is listed in relationship to the other ingredients. The
correct way
for manufacturers to list the ingredients is from the highest
content to
the lowest. The closer that soybean oil is to first on the list,
the more
     soybean oil the product contains.”

6.) Rice Bran Oil
    *************
Oil produced from the bran of the rice kernal.

From “Rice Bran Oil applied externally to the hair adds body and
healthful
    lustre.”
    http://www.ricebranhealth.com/skin.htm

“Recent research has confirmed that Rice Bran Oil is one of the
best
sources of tocotrienol, an antioxidant which may be many times
more
powerful and effective than Vitamin E.”
    http://www.ricebranhealth.com/

Rice bran oil is also used on the skin.“For a long time, there has
been a
tradition in Japan that women rub rice bran in or put rice bran
oil on
their face to keep their skin smooth. These women, having smooth
and shiny
skin, are called "Nuka-Bijin" ("Bran Beauty" in English). It is a
tradition
and people don't know the real reason why rice bran or rice bran
oil is
effective in keeping skin smooth but it is thought that it relates
to the
functions of minor components of the Rice Bran Oil. The oryzanol,
for
example, can impede the progress of melanin pigmentation by
restraining the
eryhema activity of tyrosinase as it intercepts the ultraviolet
rays at the
skin's surface and hinders its (ultraviolet rays) transmission,
and because
of this, rice bran oil is used in sunscreen products
    and *** hair conditioners. ***

6.) Thermacore complex (Allantoin, Panthenol, Tetradecanol)
     *************************************************
     Allantoin
     ********
“Allantoin is a healing, moisturizing, soothing and
anti-irritating,
keratolytic and non-toxic agent useful in dermatological,
cosmetic and
veterinary preparation. Allantoin is a valuable
cell-proliferating healing
agent which stimulates healthy tissue formation. Allantoin has a
pronounced
keratolytic and skin softening action, acts as chemical debrider
of
necrotic and scaling tissue, cleasing up the areas where applied.

     Use of Allantoin:
In treatment of : skin ulcers, wound, scalds, burns and sunburns,
carbuncles, acne and skin eruptions, fissures and abrasions,
impetigo,
     eczema, psoriasis.

rapid cell
regenration by precipitating proteins on skin. It is used as an
abrasive
and astringent agent in the end products include cosmetic

    Panthenol
    *********
    A form of B vitamin.
“Panthenol is said to stimulate cellular proliferation and
definitely aids
in tissue repair. Studies indicate that, when topically applied,
panthenol
penetrates the skin and is converted into pantothenic acid, a B
complex
vitamin. That is why it is called Pro-Vitamin B5. This action can
influence
the skin’s natural resources of pantothenic acid.”

“Panthenol is non-irritating, nonsensitizing, and noncomedogenic.
Panthenol
acts as a penetrating moisturizer. Its humectant character enables
panthenol to hold water in the product or attract water from the
environment, resulting in a moisturizing effect. Panthenol imparts
a
moisturizing and conditioning feel to skin care products. As a
skin
softener it provides suppleness, and claims are that it also acts
as an
    anti-inflammatory agent.”

feel to
hair of its effective absorption and film-making.”

     From Arion and Delahaye
     http://www.arion-delahaye.com/uk/detergency/ikeda.html

“Hydrolyzed Silk Proteins have a higher molecular weight and are
effective
film formers. Hydrolyzed Silk Protein is made by a process which
binds
silk molecules together to make silk polypeptides. These
polypeptides are
then bonded together to make silk protein. Hydrolyzed Silk
Proteins start
where the Silk Amino Acids leave off, forming a semi-permeable
barrier on
the skin and hair, which not only help to retain moisture, but
serve to
     reduce moisture loss as well.”

8.) Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein
    **********************
“This is a naturally derived, hydrolyzed wheat protein that
contains wheat
oligosaccharides (carbohydrates) and constitutes a unique
hydrating complex
    offering a combination of moisture-balancing and film-forming
properties
that work synergistically to give hair better body control, and

Because you have had several questions answered that listed the

Question #2:

Which one is the least harsh and will be best for my scalp with no
harsh effects and give moisture?”

I am not a dermatologist, or an expert on shampoo products, so the
only advice I can give you concerning this aspect of your question
comes from personal opinion.

When I look at the ingredients of the two shampoos, I must say that I
think the Graham Webb Intensives Shampoo would be the better choice,
given your sensitive scalp. My reasoning is based on the following:

The Graham Webb Intensives Shampoo has three very soothing and
moisturizing oils listed within the first six ingredients (Sesame,
Soybean and Rice). Following those three oils come two very soothing
and restorative ingredients to the scalp – allantoin and panthenol.
The shampoo also contains Vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate) which is an
extremely important ingredient to skin health.

The Clairol Shampoo has only two oils in it’s ingredient mix,
(linoleic and castor oil) and they are far down the totem pole!
Although it has some other good ingredients, I don’t think they would
do as much good for your scalp as the oils, vitamin E and other
ingredients I mentioned in the Graham Webb shampoo.

Therefore, my vote goes to the Graham Webb Intensives Shampoo!!!!

(As for your question about cleaning your hair, I think they will both
accomplish the task equally)

Question #3

“And for a tip can u please tell me why the rogaine is killing my
scalpe?? i have an ocd complex and i use a half a bottle a day!! but
what cehemicals in it kill my hair??

Okay, I am going to be brutally honest here, as I know you are coming
for help, and you have been very honest in your questions.

First of all, too much of anything, even a good thing, can be
destructive. Rogaine has proven beneficial in restoring hair loss in
many individuals. But Rogaine is a medication. You admit that you have
OCD, and you have the compulsion to put as much as ˝ a bottle of
Rogaine on your scalp each day.

I know you know there is a recommended dosage, and you are far
exceeding that amount!

   * Each bottle should last for 30 days, if used as directed.*

You should apply a dose (1 ml) of ROGAINE® directly to your scalp in
the hair loss area twice daily.
http://www.rogainecanada.com/eng/rogaine_howtouse.html

If you are using a half a bottle a day, you are using 30 times the
amount you should be using EACH DAY!

The extreme overuse of the Rogaine is what is “killing” your scalp.
(Not to mention, also your wallet, most likely!!!!)

I fully understand that this has become an obsession that is very
hard for you to control and get a handle on. That is certainly nothing
to be ashamed of or embarassed about. Many of us have behaviors that
are not always so obvious. So, don’t feel out of the ordinary here.
You have already made many friends on this board!

I know you desperately want to keep your hair, and restore some of
the hair that has been lost. But overdoing things can often create
more harm than good. Your scalp needs time to regain some of it’s
natural oils, aside from the oils in the shampoo. You probably should
not even be washing your hair each day. It is the same reason people
who take showers every day have to lather themselves with lotion.
Their skin gets dry.

If you review the Rogaine site, you know you should not apply it to
the hair, but directly to the scalp, massaging it into the skin. If
you can try to restrict yourself to the twice a day regimen, using
only the amount suggested, I believe you will see your scalp begin to
regain some health.
http://www.rogaine.com/3_howtouse.asp

You also should not apply Rogaine if your scalp reveals the following
conditions:
  Red or inflamed
  Infected
  Irritated
Painful to touch (such as occurs with severe sunburn)
  Broken or shaved
  Burned
  Sunburned
  http://www.rogainecanada.com/eng/rogaine_side_effects.html

As hard as it may be for you, if your scalp is very dry or irritated,
it might be best to stop the Rogaine for a while. Because one of the
few side effects of Rogaine is skin irritation, the extreme amount
that you use each day is most likely the cause of your irritated scalp
and, what you term, hair that is being “killed.”

Hi, there!

I have been so concerned about your scalp problem, that I did some
further searching for you to see if their might be some shampoos that
are very mild, yet cleansing, and that do not contain either sodium
laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, or ammonium lauryl sulfate.
While these ingredients are often a primary ingredient of shampoos
because of their sudsing ability, they can be extremely irritating if
your scalp is sensitive to begin with.

Therefore, I have some recommendations for you based on some further
research.

**The shampoos recommended above are based on an article and
accompanying chart I found while researching sensitive scalps,
shampoos, and sodium laurel sulfate. Please read them when you have
time.**
“Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in Shampoos: The Real Story,” by David
Steinman. Healthy Living.
http://www.aubrey-organics.com/about/articles/shampoo.cfm
Some excerpts follow:
“In its final report on the safety of sodium lauryl sulfate, the
Journal of the American College of Toxicology notes that this
ingredient has a "degenerative effect on the cell membranes because of
its protein denaturing properties." What's more, the journal adds,
"high levels of skin penetration may occur at even low use
concentration."
Unfortunately, many of the gentler detergents that may be substituted
for sodium lauryl sulfate pose their own health hazards. For example,
many companies have begun to use ethoxylated detergents such as sodium
laureth sulfate, cocamide DEA or lauramide DEA because they tend to be
less irritating.
Consumers can recognize shampoo ingredients containing ethoxylated
detergents and related ingredients by looking for the prefix, word, or
syllable PEG, polyethylene, polyethylene glycol, polyoxyethylene, eth
(as in sodium laureth sulfate), or oxynol.
Both our own commissioned independent laboratory testing and that of
the federal government have documented ethoxylated alcohol compounds
are frequently contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which is carcinogenic
and is listed by the federal government as a probable human
carcinogen.
Also, according to a 1998 report from the federal National Toxicology
Program, two DEA-based compounds‹cocamide DEA and lauramide DEA‹have
been demonstrated to be cancer-causing in at least in one species of
animal.
Given the lack of adequate research and suggestive evidence, however,
we believe it might be wise for health-conscious consumers to seek
products without sodium lauryl sulfate, especially with regard to
young children. Indeed, consumers have the power to choose safe and
perhaps even better products without sodium lauryl sulfate.
This may be a very wise choice for another reason. We have found very
often the presence of sodium lauryl sulfate in a shampoo formulation
is a "marker" for the use of other undesirable ingredients, including
formaldehyde-containing preservatives (e.g., imidazolidinyl urea);
possible cancer-causing wetting agents (e.g., cocamide DEA); and
nitrosamine-forming agents (e.g., triethanolamine).”

If I can help you with any further recommendations, please feel free
to ask. There are many, many natural shampoos on the market that are
soothing to a sensitive scalp, free of harsh chemicals, and should
work well in preserving the condition of your hair while using
Rogaine.

Take care!

anonymous,

Thank you so much...you are very generous and kind.

I wanted to ask you.....quite a while ago you asked a quesion that I
answered concerning oral supplements and vitamins for hair loss. Did
you ever try any of these? Also, have you ever tried a range of
supplements for overall health, which would also help your scalp.
One supplement I tried for quite a while, and will continue to try,
is an HGH supplement. I noticed quite a number of good results, one of
which was faster, thicker growing hair. There are a variety of human
growth hormone products, and I would not vouch for all of them. But I
have found two companies in particular that I respect.
Now, I am a woman, so the overall effects I received could be very
different than what you might expect.
However, it is something you might want to look into.

 Thanks again!

I assume it is the high alcohol content in Rogaine that is giving you
the problems (Alcohol 30% v/v, Propylene Glycol 50% v/v). This site
offers a lotion you can mix with the Rogaine:
http://www.hlcconline.com/howwemademinoxidilbetter.htm

You should probably stop using Rogaine for a while; or try to find a
minoxidil solution with less alcohol/isopropanol.

Oh, honey, if you're using 1/2 bottle of Rogaine a day, you're doing
all kinds of terrible things to the hair that you do have, as well as
to your scalp. Remember the adage about "too much of a good thing"?
Too large of a dosage of Rogaine is not only causing your scalp
problems, it is also probably WORSENING YOUR HAIR LOSS because of what
it is doing to your scalp! It doesn't matter how good a shampoo or
conditioner you use, they aren't going to help the slightest bit when
you are putting toxic doses of Rogaine on your scalp.

"- Do not use minoxidil topical if the skin on your scalp is damaged,
irritated, or sunburned. This may allow more of the medication to be
absorbed by your body, which could be *** DANGEROUS. ***

- Do not use more than 2 mL of minoxidil topical in one day.

- If an unusually large dose is applied, or if the medication is
ingested, seek *** EMERGENCY MEDICAL ATTENTION. ***

- Symptoms of a minoxidil topical overdose are not known but may
include very low blood pressure (fainting, dizziness, confusion); an
irregular or fast heart rate; headache; and flushing (redness, warmth)
of the skin."

http://www.hairtransplantmedical.com/hair_loss/rogaine.htm

"Increased hair growth has not been associated with increased systemic
absorption of topical minoxidil.

Rarely reported adverse reactions included alopecia [<--increased
baldness], hair abnormalities, chest pain, blood pressure changes,
pulse changes, hepatitis, and kidney stones."

Please, please, back yourself down to the recommended treatment
dosage.

The wonderful person you are has very little to do with the state of
your hairline.

Best wishes,
