Dear sonny2525,
It is, alas, impossible for us Researchers to answer your question as
long as we don't have at least some information on who you are and on
some of your ancestors.
Regards,
Scriptor

Scriptor is correct. Since Civil War regiments were formed by state
(and even by county within states), it would be especially helpful to
know where the people of your great (or great great) grandparents were
living.

I tried a detailed question earlier but google apparently kept
rejecting it because of the personal information. Let us try again:
My name is Cole L. Saxon, Jr. I was born on 1/11/42 in Athens, Ga. My
Paternal Grandparents were William Casey Saxon and Lillian Russell,
his wife. Russell was her maiden name. My Maternal Grandparents were
Marshall F. Smith and Ruth, his wife. I think her maiden name was
Hadden. They all died in Greensboro, Ga.which is the County Seat of
Greene, County. Hope this gives you enough keys to finalize your
research.

Cole,
It's probably your birthdate that's the sticking point. I recommend
that you post your Clarification again, omitting your birthdate, and
adding in your grandparents' birthdates (as well as as much of your
great grandparents' names and birthdates that you can obtain). Then
e-mail the Editors at answers-editors@google.com specifying
http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=146658
and requesting that they remove ONLY the Clarification with your
birthdate in it.

I have previously submitted the names of my Paternal and Maternal
grandparents and given the name of the town, state and County they all
died in.I do not have their dates of birth readily available. My
desire is for the researchers to take this and run with it from the
starting foundational data I have provided. I am will to up the fee to
$200.00 to have them do the appropriate reseacrh to find out the data
they are requesting me to research and find. If these is not doable or
a reasonable expectation at that fee level we should discontinue the
effort on this question by the google researchers and I will take this
project on myself when I have the time to do so.
I shall look forward to your response,

Dear sonny2525,
I have spent the last hours trying to find traces of your ancestors.
But all genealogy databases I consulted were no help at all. All I
found was the following:
The volunteers from Greene County, Georgia, formed Company B of the
55th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment. In that regiment, one R. C.
Saxon was staff Adjutant. A short biography of his military career in
the CS Army:
"Saxon, R. C. -- June 12, 1862 . Resigned April 8, 1863 . Elected
Captain of Co. H, 4th Regiment Georgia Reserve Infantry May 10, 1864
. Roll for September 1,-December 31, 1864 , last on file, shows he
was 'Detailed to go to Columbus, Ga.'"
But I don't have any proof that this officer belongs to your
ancestors.

I have solved quite a few genealogy questions, but this one is, alas,
a nut too tough to crack for me. Maybe one of my Fellow Researchers
has more success than I had.

Sonny --
Scriptor is an excellent researcher, particular when it comes to
genealogy topics. He knows what's publicly available on the net and
is aware of many fee-based online services, like Ancestry.com
Let me explain WHERE I'd look for you in an attempt to fill out who
family members are and then find Civil War records. The biggest
problem for researchers will be finding relatives and filling out the
family tree but the 1900-1930 Census should find your grandparents in
Greensboro, GA. These records are available via Ancestry.com or on
microfilm at the National Archives Record Administration (NARA):
You may be near a NARA regional depository:
NARA
"Regional Facilities"
http://www.archives.gov/facilities/index.html
Marriage certificates should then be acquired from Greene County to
track back a generation:
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/4833/greenerh.htm
The Civil War records are much more limited for the South but there
are at least three microfilm rolls at the National Archive Records
Administration (NARA):
M253: Consolidated Index to Compiled Service Records of Confederate
Soldiers, 1861-1864
M836: Confederate States Army Casualties: Lists and Narrative Reports,
1861-1864
M918: Confederate Soldiers Who Died in Federal Prisons & Military
Hospitals, 1861-1865
Let us know if we can help with this search. (It's probably best done
with a separate question and cancelling this one.)
A trip to NARA would take a researcher about half a day. It is
most-likely to be sucessful in locating the grandparents and perhaps
other relatives in Greensboro. Census records go back even to 1860;
so a question asking one of the following would be well-focused:
* find William Casey Saxon and Marshall F. Smith in Greensboro, GA
(Greene County) as early as possible in the 1900s. See if you can
identify their parents.
* find all Smiths and Saxons (Haddens? Russells?) in Greensboro, GA
(Greene County) in the 1860 Census.
Genealogical research is like peeling an onion in that it requires
working backwards one generation at a time. A more complete list of
the family tree needs get built first, then it's a task to link those
family members to rolls of war veterans.
I hope that this has been helpful,
