Hello,

My question concerns the LCDs for the IBM Thinkpad X20/X21/X22
laptops. Specifically, if I had a Thinkpad X20 (Machine type / model#
2662-UC1) with a 12.1" XGA screen, could I replace that screen with a
12.1 XGA screen from an X22 laptop (assuming the X22 screen is
standard, i.e., WITHOUT wireless antenna)? (Say I had an X20 with no
screen and an X22 screen without a computer).

As far as I can tell from my own research on the web, the connectors
seem similar or identical, and would snap in (I could be mistaken
however). However, things like voltages could be different even if
the LCD cable connector is compatible.

So the question is: although the X20 and X22 are different part #'s,
could one take a screen from one and place it in the other, assuming
the resolution of the LCD is the same? Am I correct about my
assumption that the LCD cable connector is the same between the
models?

I'd appreciate a brief explanation behind any answer(s) yes or no to
the above questions; i.e., "It would work because..." or "It would
short out your system because..."

Thanks

B.C.

I had indeed called IBM support. Unfortunately, the folks who answer
the phone are different from the actual technicians (under Easyserve,
they are a subcontractor called Solectron), so it wasn't possible to
speak to someone who might have "played around" and in the course of
experience tested an X22 screen on an X20.

My first indiction of this answer is no, there are most likely NOT
compatible. I came to this conclusion because these two PC's (X20 and
22) aren't a whole lot similar. However, I am NOT for certain.

I would certainly contact IBM concerning this issue before I purchased
any screens from a store. IBM Technicians will give the the best
answer for your question. Please call 1-800-426-4968 during a non
busy time (i.e. Tuesday early afternoon) to speak with a Technician.
I would have my billing information, including system serial number
and model number ready as soon as a tech answers the call. (the model
number you posted above would be handy to have, f.e.)

You may also call 1-888-746-7426 to speak with the sales department on
your possible purchase of this screen.

Thank you, and have a great day,
