Who were Jonathan Hall’s parents? Even just his father’s first and
last name will be considered an acceptable answer. Here’s what I know:

Jonathan/Johnathan/John Hall
- Born about 1810-1813 in Chenango County, New York.
- Died 10 Mar. 1875 at Morristown, Rice Co., Minnesota.
- In the 1840 census of South Bristol, Ontario Co., NY, p. 253.
- In the 1850 (p. 250), 1855 (p. 24) and 1860 (p. 783) censuses of
Cuba, Allegany Co., NY.
- In the 1870 census of Wells Township, Rice Co., MN, p. 598.
- Occupation: Matchmaker (matches for starting a fire in a hearth, not
a soul).
- Religion: Protestant Episcopal.
- Married, first, Caroline M., b. abt. 1813 VT. They had children
Henry J. (b. abt. 1838), Charles J. (b. abt. 1840 md. Victoria),
Caroline M. (b. abt. 1844), Jonathan (b. abt. 1846) and Mary M. (b.
abt. 1849 Allegany Co., NY). First four born in Ontario Co., NY.
- Married, second, Sarah E., b. abt. 1832 Cattaraugus Co., NY, widow
of Mr. Eldredge. Apparently Jonathan adopted Sarah’s son Charles
Eldredge (b. abt. 1853 Cattaraugus Co., NY) who changed his name to
Jasper Hall.
- Married, third, Laura Ursula M. Hoag, b. abt. 1843 PA, d. 1884 MN, a
daughter of Ezekiel J. Hoag and Alvira Hooper. Jonathan and Laura had
children Charles Ezekiel Hall, Andrew Johnson Hall, Carlos L. Hall,
Lura May Alvira Hall and Frank Hall, born between 1864 and 1874.

There were many Halls in New York in the 1800s. I have checked these
sources in Chenango County:
- Censuses of 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1850 and 1860. Many Halls are
listed, including several with a child in the right age range to have
been Jonathan Hall (born abt. 1810-1813). Households with at least one
male under age 10 in 1820 were: Josiah of Greene, John of Oxford, John
of Guilford and John Hall Jr. of Preston. Households with at least one
male age 15-20 in 1830 were L. W. (Luther Wildman) Hall of Bainbridge,
Josiah of Greene, Amos of Pitcher, Alpheus of Smyrna, John of German,
Thomas P. of Norwich, John of Preston and Luke of Smyrna.
- Deeds: Grantor and grantee indexes, 1798-1874. Many Halls are
listed. I’ve checked some deeds, but none involve Jonathan.
- Cemetery records. Index to cemetery records, books 1-6, at the
Guernsey Memorial Library, Norwich, NY, 1954. Many Halls.
- Unpublished cemetery, church and town records, by the DAR. FHL film
812,916.
- Unpublished bible and family records of Chenango County, by the DAR.
- Index to estates, 1798-1970.
- Index to wills, 1797-1875.
- Estate records (letters of administration): Alpheus Hall (1832),
Edward Hall (1825) and John Hall (1859). None was Jonathan’s father.
- Index to the History of Chenango and Madison Counties, NY, 1880.
Many Halls. There was an Ebenezer Carlos Hall, known as just Carlos
Hall, mentioned on page 423 of the book. I haven’t found any
connection between him and Jonathan Hall.
- Biographical Sketches of the Leading Citizens of Chenango County,
NY, 1898. No Hall.
- New Berlin, Chenango Co., NY, cemetery records.
- Chenango County Historian’s Office: Indexes to cemetery records,
wills and directories.

Jonathan named his first son Henry and two sons Charles. Maybe
Jonathan’s father was named Henry or Charles. He also had a son
Carlos, maybe named after a relative. These are candidates for
Jonathan’s father:
- Henry Hall bought land in Ontario Co., NY, from Leonard Fisher in
1834 and sold land in the same year to Sally R. Frisbie. Vol. 56, pp.
55, 57. Abram and David Fisher are listed in the 1840 census of South
Bristol. I have ordered these deeds.
- Simeon/Simon Hall of Middlesex, Yates Co., NY, 1820, 1825 and 1830.
He had a male son the right age and could have been Simeon Hall, b.
1783 CT, s/o Jonathan Hall & Ruth (IGI).
- Jonathan Hall of Bloomfield, Ontario Co., NY, in the 1820 census.
The 1830 census of Tompkins County shows a Jonathan Hall in Groton and
another one in Ulysses.
