I'd like to know the names of any researchers, what research is being
carried out, contact information, etc. for the part of the "Toyota IT
Center" that is in California. I've found a few pointers to this
center on the web, but not much detail. For example:

The full name name given to this center is the Toyota Infotechnology
Center USA Inc. This is a subsidiary organization of the Toyota
Infotechnology Center Co Ltd. Both organizations have a web site at
http://www.toyota-itc.com/en/profile/

The US contact details are:

TOYOTA InfoTechnology Center, U.S.A., Inc.
4009 Miranda Avenue, Suite 200
Palo Alto, CA 94304
Tel:650-251-0500 Fax:650-852-9350

[A New York address is also given, and the New York office comes under
the Research and Business Planning Division]:
9 West 57th Street, Suite 4900
New York, NY 10019
Tel:212-715-7444 Fax:212-759-7670]

The US Center was established on April 2, 2001, with a capital of $8.1
million, and wholly owned by Toyota Infotechnology Center Co Ltd. Its
personnel consists of 13 people. The board members are Tadao Mitsuda
(President and CEO), Hiroshi Yamada (Executive VP) and Nobuhiko Sahara
(Director).

“Toyota ITC's main mission is to develop and provide advanced
world-class information technologies to its shareholder companies as
well as other Toyota Group companies. Toyota ITC's main focus area is
mobile & IP communication technologies, integrated seamlessly in the
infrastructure that delivers communication over mobile terminals.”

Norikazu (Jack) Endo is Corporate Manager in the Research & Planning
Division of the US Center (email endojack@us.toyota-itc.com). He gave
a presentation at a symposium organized by JETRO (Japan External Trade
Organization) San Francisco in January 2002. You can access the
overheads in pdf format at:

(warning, it’s very slow to download!)

The ITC Center as a whole has as its objective the development of
advanced, world-class information technologies to meet market needs.
This includes the research, development and evaluation of
technologies, hardware and software research, analysis and planning of
market and business models, and the management of intellectual
property rights. Its area of interest is Internet-based “mobile & IP
communication technologies integrated seamlessly from the
infrastructure through the terminals.” It revolves around providing
in-vehicle information, eg for navigation and other information
purposes, to the driver, as well as information on the state of the
vehicle. Fee collection systems, provision of information about the
vehicle in cases of accident, emergency and theft, cruise-assist, and
communication between vehicles are some of the aspects that are
covered under this concept. There are also illustrations of integrated
information systems for public transport and for goods vehicles.

This is an important area of activity. According to a 1999 Strategis
Group study: “The U.S. automotive telematics market is poised for
explosive growth. Revenues from automotive telematics services are
projected to rise from less than $40 million in 1999 to over $1.7
billion by 2004. The number of subscribers is projected to grow from
under 200,000 at year-end 1999 to more than 11 million by 2004.”

I have found some article co-authored by one of the Toyota ITC USA
researchers: Onur Altintas, which should give some idea of the work
that is being done there:
