Question ID: 147785
I have a Sharp LC20B2UA LCD TV; with it I use a Memorex model: MVD2028
DVD/VCD/MP3 CD Player. I use Photoshop 6 to prepare JPEG Images so
that I can use my TV as a digital picture frame. As my original photos
come from high resolution 35MM film scans I can make any size and
resolution JPEG I wish using the Photoshop image menu. I then burn the
JPEG's to CD and play the CD on the DVD. I have tried many different
size and resolution combinations of the JPEG's all have the same
problem. None of the JPEG's uses the full viewing area of the LCD
screen that is they leave a black border around the photo. Can you
tell me how to make my JPEG's use the full screen?

Hello diverdon,

Please note that there might be no way to fix this, but I am going to
try my best to help you resolve this problem.

I do believe the problem is with your Memorex model mvd2028 and not
your TV. First, your Memorex model only appears to officially support
Kodak picture cds.

Try changing the image to the following two resolutions (make sure you
actually change the resolution and SAVE them, and not just blow them
up on your screen). and then see what they look like on your tv.

35mm: 2048 x 3072
35mm: 1024 x 1536

If you have Windows XP, clicking on the picture should make it say
"Dimensions: 2048 x 3072" in the Details pane to the left.

Also are you sure that there is no black area around the actual Photo
in Photoshop 6? To double check this, copy the image and paste it into
MSPaint.

To start paint, click Start and then click Run. Type in: mspaint and
then click ok. When Paint opens up, click on Edit and Paste. It might
ask you to resize, and then you should click on Yes. Now, make sure
that there is no extra white or black space around the image. Use the
resizer in the lower right to resize the white space so that it takes
up only what the image takes up. Click on File, Save As, type in a
name, change the format to Jpeg and burn it to CD-R.

Another suggestion would be to see if your dvd player supports GIFs,
BMPs etc.

I look forward to your response,

35mm: 2048 x 3072
35mm: 1024 x 1536

This seems counter intuitive to me. The resolutions you suggest are
based on the shape of a 35mm negative which has a 1.5:1 aspect ratio.
The aspect ratio of the TV is 1.33:1. The LCD TV has a VGA screen =
480 pixels high X 640 pixels wide X RGB = 921,600 pixels. But I did
come to you for help so I gave it a try and made JPEG’s in the sizes
you suggest. After burning them to CD and displaying them on the LCD
screen I found the results to be what I expected the margin on the
left and right side of the screen is about ¾” while the margins on the
top and bottom are about twice that. Accounting for the difference in
the aspect ratio. I have tried many different sizes and resolutions.
If the proportion is 1.33:1 I get a uniform approx. 3/4” border. When
I try something higher or wider the smaller border is about ¾” and the
other border is larger according to the proportions of the image.

Also are you sure that there is no black area around the actual Photo
in Photoshop 6? To double check this, copy the image and paste it into
MSPaint.
I am proficient in Photoshop. The margin is not in the source image.
The margin is not in the JPEG when I save it. There is no margin until
I try to display it as described.

Photoshop 6 can read Kodak picture disc but will not save to that
format. But I really liked the idea that another format might give
different results so I proceeded to make disc’s in each of the formats
to which I can save from Photoshop. GIF, TIFF, EPS, FPO, EPS, PSD,
AMIGA IFF, BMP, FILMSTRIP, PICT, PCX, PDF, AND PNG. None of the above
will play at all on the DVD. To bad I cannot think of anywhere I can
borrow a Kodak disc.

I borrowed another brand of DVD from a friend and played my jpeg disc
on it. The border was about half the size as when played on my DVD.

Hello diverdon,

Please clarify... was it another dvd player? I currently have some
emails out and am hoping to receive a definate reply as to whether it
is possible to remove the border.

the above refers to a different brand of DVD player, A Magnavox. It
still had a border but it was much smaller. The border was approx.
3/8" with the same disc which gives 3/4" border on my DVD.

I think it's probably down to your player.

What if (and I wouldn't have the first clue how to do this myself) you
actually burn a DVD which simply contains a looping video of your
jpeg?

Something like that anyway.

I like your idea jumpingjoe but I don't have a dvd burner or any video
editing software. It does not seem like I should have to do that does
it?
