for billing: Have signs/posters around the hot-spot area, then have a
proxy where you must enter a password given when they sign up with
you, before they are able to access anything besides the "sign up with
us!" page. (You know those annoying work proxies, where they come up
with one page "This site is not company aproved! Click here to
override with a password!") The password would be assigned per user,
then you'd need a sniffer to detect traffic on your network, the
sniffer would have to decrease a timer on each users account for any
time they're connected. This way you bill per hour, or whatever.
Costs:
Initial setup:
2 gateways should suffice, that'll serve more than the number of
people you'll be able to gather wirelessly in a park.. Make sure your
gateways have dhcp servers on them or you'll need one ip address per
person connected wirelessly from your isp. Gateways should range from
150-350 USD for sufficient ones.
You'll need a few passthrough wireless signal amplifiers, they'll
probably end up at 100-250 USD, the amount you'll need is dependant on
the amount of distortion in your area (make sure you're not near a
nuclear power plant!) and the space you want to expand over.
10$ consulting fee (to me)
Monthly payments would basically be limited to your internet service
provider's fee, and any taxes provided by your government for offering
such services. Also, I guess, you'll need a phone line for when people
call for activation, someone staffed (if not you) to assign usernames
and passwords to people that call, and you may even have to find space
to rent to put the wireless amplifiers.
Payment would likely be done through credit card over the phone.
For security, you'll also want to set up WEP encryption which would be
changed daily and given to customers on top of the username/password
you assign them to get past the proxy. |
