I would like in a text based (or Excel) format:-
1) A comprehensive list of all the UK Universities & Colleges.
2) A list of the societies & clubs within each university.
3) An email or phone point of contact for each club.

Hi Ben,
While researching your question, it became apparent to me that
according to the British Council, regarding societies and clubs in UK
universities "...most of the entertainment programs and social
activities available universities or colleges are arranged by the
student union. Often there will be a union building somewhere on the
campus which has restaurants, bars, shops, and a variety of other
facilities, all run by the student union."
The student union tend to take it upon themselves to be the center of
student life...so all information regarding what is available for
students can be found there.
Since some UK universities have over 80 clubs and societies, will
giving you contact information for the student unions and the url of
each university be sufficient for an answer? Let me know what you
decide. Thanks.

Unfortunately not. I already had come across the fact that all the
club\societies are unique in the main to the individual university and
as such there was unlikely to be a UK "directory".
I really need a list of the UK universities (east to find, I guess)
and then the list of individual club\societies for each university and
the "point of contact" details for each one (much more difficult, I
guess). This, I again guess, would normally be one of the students
involved with the individual club.
Hope this helps

Hi Ben,
I'm writing to give you a progress report and give you an indication
of possible time requirements in order to provide you with your answer
as per your request.
As you have rightly stated, the first part of the question was
relatively easy to collate. I have completed the list of UK
Universities. However, the second and third parts of the question are
proving to be rather time consuming. In the 8 hours that I have worked
on these parts, I have managed to obtain the required information for
11 out of a total of 160 Universities. It should be noted that there
is an average of 70 clubs/societies sites to visit and contacts to
record for each university.
As you can see, the research is likely to take a considerable time to
complete. If you would like a prompt, economically efficient answer, I
can provide you, in a lot less time, with complete lists of
clubs/societies which you can browse at your leisure and which will
link you to the contact url.
If you would like, I can show you samples of the manner you requested
and my proposed method so you can decide.

Hi Rainbow,
Firstly, thankyou for you efforts so far.....
Can I have an example of the data you have gathered so far, and your
proposed alternative?
Then I can let you know if your solution is acceptable.
Thanks again!

Many societies/clubs do not have a specific email adress or telephone
number to contact. When this is the case, the university gives a
general address/telephone to contact, which would be the Student Union

Thanks.

Hi,
Ok well obviously 10 days work is too much.
If you can give me a list of the universities, I will select the ones
most important, then if you give me a list of the clubs\societies I
will then list the most important ones to have contact details for. It
would be helpful to know the number of members the clubs have when
deciding which ones I need contact details for.
This will hopefully shrink the amount of work required to a sensible
amount.
Let me know if this is ok.
Cheers

Hi Ben,
Thank you for your clarification. This method of answering your
question is fine with me. When you give me your selection of
universities, I will be posting the lists of their clubs/societies
with the url as an answer and we can continue from there. Let me know
if this is ok with you.
You can find a list of all the universities in the UK here:

I'll be waiting for your selection to start on this right away.

No problem....

Hi Ben,
Firstly, I would like to apologize for the delay in getting these
lists to you. The bad weather we've had here severed my internet
access.
I have complied the list of societies/clubs and their urls for the
universities you requested. However, hardly any of the universities
post how many members are signed up to their clubs. The exception is
Cambridge University. At the end of each club listed there, I added
the number of members. Using this university as an example, you can
deduce which clubs are more popular than others with respect to the
other universities.
I have separated the list into two documents for easier browsing. You
can find them both here:
http://www.lucidmatrix.com/uploads/UK Universities-A-K.doc
http://www.lucidmatrix.com/uploads/UK Universities - L - Z.doc
You may want to save them before the 30-day period, after which they
will be deleted.
I'll be waiting for your selection of societies/clubs to give you
their contact information (where available).
Best regards,
rainbow |

Ben,
For some reason the urls I posted did not completely underline as links.
Highlight each link and copy and paste in the address bar. That should do it.
Let me know if you have any problems opening them.
