Would it be possible to supply any more information? When you say
it's an "old song", do you mean from the 1920s or from the 1600s? Any
ideas (even if it's a guess) would be helpful.

Thanks!

Here are partial lyrics of this song which was popular in early 1920's

A Beggar am I and I constantly tramp
From town onto town in the dry and the damp
and often at night....?

refrain: For I am old and ragged and cold
And driven away from the door

I shan't be by any means the first to wonder this, but the song
doesn't go along the lines

A beggar am I; yet enamored of one of cypress mold:
One in whose belt the hand bides only with silver and with gold.
Bring wine! let first the hand of Hafiz
   The cheery cup embrace!
   Yet only on one condition---
   No word beyond this place!

-- does it?

no, I'm afraid that's not it. The song must have been popular at the
turn of the century since a now 89 year old boy used to hear his
mother sing it.
