Question ID: 148123
I have an HP 318 digital camera. When I unload images from the camera
to my computer (windows 98)I usually can see the images immediately in
a thumbnail sized picture. If I double click on the thumbnail I can
see the image in its proper size. However recently, when we unload
images to the computer, the images cannot be seen. Instead, each
image is covered by the "mgi photosuite" icon. This means the only
way I can view the image is by double clicking on it and when I do, it
seems to be going into a different folder. This is making the process
of identifying each image and moving them to a different location much
more difficult and is effecting the efficiency of our home business.
Can you help? As you can probably tell, we are not very computer
savvy. It just seems as though it is fixable since the images are
still unloading okay, we just can't see them without doubleclicking
them. We have emailed HP tech support and have not been able to get a
reply. Thanks

Have you installed new software (or reinstalled old software) since
installing your digital camera software? If so, what?

Hi Captain,

Thankfully the Internet is full of friendly people who know the
answers to problems like yours. A search of Google Groups for:

"mgi photosuite" thumbnails
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%22mgi+photosuite%22+thumbnails

brings up a few discussions of how to restore the thumbnails.

The first and third links have answers, and I quote a section from the
third link here:

--------------
It appears that installing MGI PhotoSuite has damaged the necessary
registry
entries to allow the thumbnail viewer in Me to display thumbnails.

To fix this, enter the following from a command prompt such as Start |
Run:

regsvr32 thumbvw.dll

and press enter. Hopefully this should re-register thumbvw.dll and
add back the
necessary missing registry entries."
--------------

If that doesn't work, there are some slightly different remedies
detailed here:
http://www.aumha.org/a/broad.php

--------------
If the computer has any version of Internet Explorer 4, click Start,
then Run, and type:
regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll

If the computer has Internet Explorer 5, click Start, then Run, and
type:
regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll

If the computer has IE5, but not Win98 SE, sometimes the following
works better: In Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, select Internet
Explorer 5 and click Remove to bring up the IE5 repair tool. Run the
repair tool.
--------------

Hopefully these cures work as well for you as they did for other folk.
If they don't, just let me know in a clarification and I'll probe
deeper.

Best wishes,
robertskelton-ga

Hi Kriswrite,

Thanks for your prompt response to my question. I cannot recall
installing any new software since this problem began occurring on
January 16th. We purchased the camera and installed the software in
January 2002 and have used it without incident until the 16th of Jan.
2 days ago I uninstalled and re-installed the HP scanner software
hoping it would revert back to its old functioning but nothing
changed.
Thanks again,

Craig

hi robertskelton
first off, i sent you a message (by mistake) intended for another
individual who answered my question. My apologies.
Your answers are very helpful and easy to understand. I have tried
each of your links and entered the information requested and I'm not
having success. The third link you gave me (the one that you quoted)
is EXACTLY what is going on with me. Unfortunately, I didn't have the
same success when I typed in regsvr32 thumbvw.dll. While it did
indicate it was successful, it didn't change my problem. The other
links said the file names typed in didn't exist. Any other
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, you are most
helpful. Craig

Hi Kriswrite,
Thanks for your prompt response to my question. To answer your
question, I have not recently installed new software or reinstalled
old software. I have had my digital camera a little over a year
(wouldn't you know this happens just when the warranty expires)
without incident. On January 16th, this began happening. I did try 2
days ago to uninstall/reinstall my HP software and it didn't help. If
you have any further suggestions I would be most appreciative.

Thanks again, Craig
