answer you; due to personal difficulties, I have not been able to
answer any Google Answers questions for over a week.

---------------------------------

The order in which the ingredients are listed is very important, since
United States law requires that ingredients of cosmetic products must
be labeled with a list of ingredients in descending order by quantity.
This means that the first ingredient is the most plentiful, and the
ingredients listed thereafter are present in lesser and lesser
amounts.

For more on the labeling law, you may want to read this article:

U. S. Food and Drug Administration: Cosmetic Labeling
http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-labl.html

Clairol Renewal 5x Shampoo, Revitalizing and Clairol Renewal 5x
Shampoo, Replenishing are very similar. As you can see, the first five
ingredients are the same in both products (Water, Sodium Laureth
Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Fragrance.)The
"Replenishing" formula has Dihydroxypropyl Peg 5 Linoleammonium
Chloride in greater quantity than the "Revitalizing" formula, and has
relatively less Panthenol. It is not possible to tell precisely how
the amounts of these chemicals differ, since the shampoo's
manufacturer is not required to list exact quantities of each
ingredient. In a shampoo that contains more than thirty ingredients,
it is obvious that some of these substances are present in very tiny
quantities. The order of the ingredients on the list tells us quite a
lot about a product, but it does not tell us the exact amount of each
ingredient -- we can't know from the label exactly how much of each
substance is in there. We can determine that there is more of Chemical
A than of Chemical B, but it's not possible to be certain how much
more.

Since cosmetic manufacturers want to keep their exact recipes a
secret, they don't usually tell us exactly how much of an ingredient
is in a product. In comparing the two Clairol shampoos, the
information on the label of the "Replenishing" formula lists
Dihydroxypropyl Peg 5 Linoleammonium Chloride ahead of Panthenol. This
means that, if the product is accurately labeled according to the law,
the shampoo contains more Dihydroxypropyl Peg 5 Linoleammonium
Chloride (which primarily serves as an antistatic agent that makes
comb-through easy) than Panthenol (a conditioner that helps the hair
and skin to lock in moisture.) The "Revitalizing" shampoo contains
Panthenol as its sixth most plentiful ingredient; in the
"Replenishing" shampoo, Panthenol is seventh on the list.

Here are some references that will help give you a more detailed view
of these two ingredients and their different functions:

----= PANTHENOL =-----

"Panthenol, humectant, draws moisture inside the hair shaft making it
feel fuller and thicker."

http://www.fabaocanada.com/haircare/tricomin-shampoo.htm

"Panthenol:
- Improves and increases the moisture-retention capacity of the skin
(moisturizing effect), dry skin stays supple and elastic for longer
- Anti-inflammatory and anti-itching effect
- Stimulates epithelization (skin regeneration). Small wounds,
scratches and blisters heal better
- Makes hair easier to comb
- Reduces hair splitting
- Improves the condition of damaged hair
- Thickens the hair and provides sheen"

The Buying Group: Panthenol

"Panthenol:
From Vitamin B5. Used to create humectant properties in skin and hair
conditioners. Also highly regarded for its anti-inflammatory
properties."

----= DIHYDROXYPROPYL PEG 5 LINOLEAMMONIUM CHLORIDE =-----

Dihydroxypropyl Peg 5 Linoleammonium Chloride is a cationic antistatic
agent also known as Monaquat SL-5.

"Chemical and Physical Properties: Antistatic Agents... Monaquat SL-5,
cationic...Static protection, good."

Uniquema: Chemical and Physical Properties: Antistatic Agents
www.uniqema.com/fibres/lit/fibres8.pdf

"A powerful cationic conditioning agent. A biomimetic phospholipid
derived from safflower oil that is highly enriched with essential
fatty acids is combined with a linoleic acid that has been quaternized
to enhance substantively. This synergistic combination yields a
product that can greatly improve wet and dry comb out with flyaway
control when the hair is dry. Colaquat L-35 is based on fatty acids
that have been identified as essential to the maintenance of healthy
skin and hair, suggesting its use as an additive in liquid soaps and
lotions. It is quickly absorbed into the skin and hair matrix and can
provide sustained benefits long after use. It should be used in
formulations at levels of 2%-4%.

---------------------------------

If a shampoo has relatively more Dihydroxypropyl Peg 5 Linoleammonium
Chloride, and less Panthenol (as does the "Replenishing" shampoo,)
this would lead us to expect a greater ability to fight static
("fly-away" hair.) Since the "Revitalizing" formula has more Panthenol
(a humectant, or moisture-retentive) and less antistatic agent for
hair control, it would seem to be more intended for those with brittle
hair that needs moisture (such as those with colored and permed hair,
toward whom the product is specifically targeted.) It's worth noting
that both of these products contain more fragrance than they contain
of any conditioning ingredient. I've sniffed these shampoos. The smell
is pleasant, but not overpowering. If there's more perfume in there
than conditioner, there may not be enough conditioner to help someone
like yourself who has severe scalp flaking problems.

Regardless of what manufacturers may say about shampoos, remember that
no shampoo truly has the power to "revitalize" or "replenish" hair,
since all of the hair you can see and touch is dead keratin protein,
not living tissue. The only portion of your hair that is alive is the
root, which is deep inside the skin, and not accessible to surface
treatments such as shampoos. All we can really expect of a good
(nonmedicated) shampoo is that it should clean the hair and leave it
feeling smooth and easy-to-comb.

If you are concerned about the lauryl/laureth sulfates and other
frightening ingredients of most modern shampoos, you might want to
consider trying a very simple shampoo made from vegetable substances,
whose recipe contains no detergents, no many-syllabled unpronounceable
chemicals, and nothing that sounds as if it would peel the paint off a
battleship: Liggett's Shampoo Bar. Well, maybe it does have one rather
scary-sounding thing: it is manufactured with a small amount of sodium
hydroxide, also known as lye. This sounds dreadful, I know (most of us
would not want to smear Granny's lye soap on our heads,) but I have
found the Liggett products to be wonderfully mild, pleasant, and easy
to use. They clean very gently, but thoroughly, and you aren't paying
for a product whose number one ingredient is water!

At one time in my life, due to illness and medications, I lost most of
my hair. My skin and scalp were frail and cracked and painful, and
Liggett's Shampoo was the only thing that seemed to help. My hair is
thick and healthy-looking now, and I still enjoy the Liggett's.

Liggett's Shampoo Bars are available in several formulas. You might be
interested in the "Damaged Hair" formula or the "Tea Tree with Hemp
Oil" variety. This product may be bought at many drugstores, or
online:

http://www.naturallivingstore.com/shampoobars1.html

I hope this will help. My search strategy involved Web searches with
Google, FAST, Inktomi, and AllTheWeb search engines, using search
terms composed of the ingredients of the shampoos.

Please do not hesitate to request clarification if you need more
information. I'll be glad to offer further assistance if it is needed.

Best wishes,

Oh, honey, if you're using 1/2 bottle of Rogaine a day, you're doing
all kinds of terrible things to the hair that you do have, as well as
to your scalp. Remember the adage about "too much of a good thing"?
Too large of a dosage of Rogaine is not only causing your scalp
problems, it is also probably WORSENING YOUR HAIR LOSS because of what
it is doing to your scalp! It doesn't matter how good a shampoo or
conditioner you use, they aren't going to help the slightest bit when
you are putting toxic doses of Rogaine on your scalp.

"- Do not use minoxidil topical if the skin on your scalp is damaged,
irritated, or sunburned. This may allow more of the medication to be
absorbed by your body, which could be *** DANGEROUS. ***

- Do not use more than 2 mL of minoxidil topical in one day.

- If an unusually large dose is applied, or if the medication is
ingested, seek *** EMERGENCY MEDICAL ATTENTION. ***

- Symptoms of a minoxidil topical overdose are not known but may
include very low blood pressure (fainting, dizziness, confusion); an
irregular or fast heart rate; headache; and flushing (redness, warmth)
of the skin."

http://www.hairtransplantmedical.com/hair_loss/rogaine.htm

"INCREASED HAIR GROWTH HAS ***NOT*** been associated with increased
systemic absorption of topical minoxidil.

Rarely reported adverse reactions included alopecia [<--increased
baldness], hair abnormalities, chest pain, blood pressure changes,
pulse changes, hepatitis, and kidney stones."

Please, please, back yourself down to the recommended treatment
dosage.

The wonderful person you are has very little to do with the state of
your hairline.

Best wishes,
