Hello whiskersuk,

Thank you for your question.

Actually, I think the error you are receiving is really a "216" error
at a particular address.

Infinisource at http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/troub-345.shtml
explains the problem this way:

"Runtime 216 Errors

Most Runtime 216 Errors are associated with known Trojan's ("viruses")

Here are the most frequently experienced Runtime 216 errors:

Error Message: Runtime Error 216 at 00002021
Error Message: Runtime Error 216 at 00002938
Error Message: Runtime Error 216 at 000043f2
Error Message: Runtime Error 216 at 0007EA4A (Backdoor-G2.svr.21
virus)

If you get any of these, get some up-to-date anti-virus software.

There are a few other Runtime 216 Errors, and not all will mean that
you are infected by a virus."

A discussion at the expertsXexchange says:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Win98/Q_10581881.html

Q: "Windows 98 starts up okay but after a short time, error box saying
'runtime error 216 at [various numbers]' shows up. I can't delete the
error box, but I am able to run programs with it on desktop. Am
running Norton 2000, but this problem never occurred before... "

A: (There are several and any may be valid in your particular case)

""This error can occur if your computer is infected with a SubSeven
Trojan virus. If infected, you should have the following line in the
Win.ini file:

Run=Msrexe.exe

You should run an updated antivirus program to remove the virus.
Information regarding the virus can also be found at:
www.hackfix.org/subseven

Info here too:

http://www.windows-help.net/bbs/Forum3/HTML/000585.html "

"Get the cleaner for a trojan viruses
http://www.moosoft.com/cleaner.html

These are confirmed Trojan horses

runtime error 216 at 00002021
runtime error 216 at 00002938
runtime error 216 on 000043f2
Runtime error 216 at 0007EA4A

see:
http://www.avp.ch/avpve/ "

"Try going to Start > Run > then type msconfig > enter.

In the box the last tab "Startup", see what is listed in there to
start when windows starts up. This is a list of things there that you
might me able to disable......also speed up windows load time......

Also, look in your Autoexec.bat file for anything abnormal....usually
you should see nothing there unless you have a 3dfx card or sound card
where you can set settings and stuff..... "

So, in short, most references to Runtime Error 216 that you will find
agree that it is because of a virus or trojan infection on your
computer.

The advice above to get and run "The Cleaner" is excellent as this is
a highly rated program. If you do not have virus protection software,
then, by all means get Norton or McAffee and run a scan with current
virus definitions.

Here are current urls for several utilities that may be of value:
