Hello notaclue,

Thank you for your question.

Searching [chronic halitosis +cure] I found a number of "claimed"
cures. Having not tried them, I can not vouch for their effectiveness.
I did eliminate those that appeared as obvious "hype" and put together
this list of sites for you to visit:

ProFresh
http://www.profresh.com/index.shtml

Claims to have a patented product

"...NOT A COVER UP -- ProFresh attacks bad breath at it's source -
your tongue! That's right, scientific studies have shown that bad
breath is caused by bacteria that accumulate on the back of your
tongue. ProFresh has been scientifically developed and proven
clinically effective to: remove the odor causing bacteria, eliminate
the noxious odors they produce and leave the user with fresh clean
breath.

WHY IS PROFRESH DIFFERENT?

The information on this site will help you understand what causes bad
breath and why ProFresh Oral Rinse, with it's patented formula works.
ProFresh is different because it is the only oral rinse that contains
active chlorine dioxide which allows you to remove the odor-causing
bacteria. The U.S. Patent awarded to Dr. Richter excludes any other
oral rinse from containing any more than 0.0003% of chlorine dioxide
(not a significant amount). We have helped thousands of people solve
their bad breath problems with a simple daily regimen..."

Stop Bad Breath
http://www.bad-breath-cure.com/

"...It is estimated that 80 million Americans and millions more around
the globe are affected by chronic halitosis or bad breath.

Sour taste in the mouth? Metallic taste in the mouth? White coating on
the tongue? For many with halitosis, these symptoms are not the result
of poor hygiene.

ABC News Medical Editor Dr. Timothy Johnson explained on the news
magazine show 20/20 that most bad breath is produced by a type of
bacteria in the back of the mouth, particularly on the back of the
tongue. These bacteria thrive on lack of oxygen "and are usually
washed away by saliva, but when they're not they can actually form a
kind of "tongue plaque", producing foul smelling gases called volatile
sulfur compounds so that is what we call bad breath or halitosis,"
Johnson said..."

Testimonials for their product - TheraBreath - can be found here:

"Unique Treatment Kit

Convenient and Cost-effective

At the Center For Breath Treatment we get many calls both nationally
and internationally inquiring about our services. Many people make the
trip to San Francisco and complete our full treatment program. There
are many however, that either find the cost of travel, lodging, and
the treatment ($550.00) too expensive, or they can't get the time to
see us. These same people have expressed to us their frustration at
not being able to treat their problem while knowing that there is a
treatment readily available at our Center in San Francisco.

At the urging of many callers, Dr. Dailley developed a unique
easy-to-use and cost-effective breath treatment kit which is less
expensive than the in-office treatment, yet it is highly effective at
quickly eliminating chronic bad breath. Our breath treatment kit,
along with other treatment items and all prices, can be found in our
WEB STORE. The treatment kit contains specific home-care treatment
techniques that aid in eliminating your bad breath, and specialized,
medicated products that when used properly with our program, will
effectively eliminate halitosis. Unlike many websites that simply sell
halitosis products, we have a treatment center where we treat patients
suffering from halitosis and fully understand all the causes and
issues related to this problem..."

Has a slightly different perspective:

"Bad Breath Treatments and Cures

"Dragon Mouth" has Americans spending over $1 billion a year on
mouthwashes, mints, sprays, drops, gums, and other products that they
hope will eliminate their problem. These products are a waste of money
and they can actually worsen the odor.

Mouth Wash and Bad Breath

Most commercial mouthwashes contain alcohol, which dries your mouth.
The drier your mouth gets the more bacteria grow, since there is no
saliva to wash them away. Furthermore, common mouthwashes and mints
can place a coating on your tongue. This coating acts to seal the
bacteria deeper into the tongue giving them additional protection to
live and multiply. Now you finally know why your Scope and Listerine
do not work to cure bad breath! Another problem with alcohol
containing products is that they dry your teeth and make them
sensitive to cold foods, not to mention increasing the risk of
cavities. Some clinical studies indicate that these alcoholed products
can increase the risk of mouth and throat cancer by up to 60%...

...Chronic Halitosis - Stubborn

Chronic halitosis, on the other hand, does NOT improve over time and
does not go away with even your best efforts of home care. Halitosis
is a social problem that affects over 50 million people and it can
have devastating effects. People tend to form negative impressions
about individuals who have bad breath. One's self esteem can be
seriously impaired, while social and business relationships can
suffer...

...Depending on the reading, we examine all possible causes for your
problem and we show you how to use the Oxyfresh products accordingly
so that you will never have to worry about halitosis again.

If you do not live close to our office, then we have made special
arrangements for you to be able to purchase Oxyfresh products direct
from the manufacturer. You may go to Oxyfresh.com or you can Call
Oxyfresh at 1-800-223-7374 and tell the operator that you would like
to purchase products under I.D. # 176239801 or reference name
HALMAGHI.

We recommend that you order item #623 to start your treatment, along
with the Oral Care Instruction Video that shows you how to cure
halitosis. Please check out all of the wonderful products that
Oxyfresh has to offer.

Please follow these specific directions in order to achieve success
with your home care breath program:..."

"...Dr. Richard A. Miller is the author of the book, Beating Bad
Breath, and a nationally known expert in the diagnosis and treatment
of breath problems. Inspired by his patients' pleas for help with
their social and business problems caused by bad breath, Dr. Miller
has developed a successful program that uses proven scientific
techniques and has helped hundreds of people eliminate their problems
of halitosis...

...What resulted was a professional treatment for halitosis that gets
over 95% success and the only book available on halitosis, Beating Bad
Breath.

As a general dentist who treats all types of dental problems, I am
very proud to be in the forefront of this area of dental treatment and
would like to offer you a free copy of my book when you come in as a
patient to our office.

No one need ever be bothered by bad breath again.

That's a promise."

Dr. Mark Fried
http://www.drmarkfried.com/ARTICLES/badbreath.html

"...What causes bad breath?

Most bad breath is caused by sulfurous compounds produced by either
oral bacteria or sulfur-containing foods such as garlic. Saliva flow,
the pH (acidity or alkalinity) of the mouth and diet play a role
too...

When we’re awake, oxygen-rich saliva acts as a natural mouthwash,
keeping the mouth’s bacterial population in balance. But overnight,
when saliva flow slows, the pH of the mouth shifts from acidic (low
pH) to alkaline (higher pH), allowing odor-producing bacteria to
flourish. The result is "morning breath."...

...At least one-third of minor halitosis problems are caused by
periodontal (gum) disease. The same destructive bacteria that cause
bone and gum loss also produce foul-smelling sulfur compounds.
Treating the underlying disease often will eliminate the odor
problem...

...Chronic halitosis may be a sign of diabetes, kidney failure,
cirrhosis of the liver or even a hiatal hernia (protrusion of the
stomach through the diaphragm into the chest). These conditions create
digestive problems that lead to excess sulfur-producing bacteria.
Certain cancers also can produce their own malodorous compounds.

Enzyme deficiencies may also explain bad breath. People with "garlic
breath" may have a problem digesting sulfurous amino acids. Treatment
is to eliminate garlic, onions, and broccoli from the diet...

Halitosis: Quick Fixes

Americans spend more than $200 million a year for fresher smiles.
Alcohol and eucalyptol, key components of many mouthwashes, are
effective antibacterial agents. Essential oils such as thymol and
menthol, also found in many popular mouth fresheners, reduce halitosis
by diluting the smelly sulfuric compounds produced by certain oral
bacteria and present in some foods.

Here are a few homegrown alternatives:

• Drink buttermilk or eat yogurt with active cultures. These contain
lactobacilli that help counterbalance odor-causing bacteria.

• Nibble on fennel or anise seeds that contain oils that both freshen
your breath and aid digestion. Also try aromatic oils, such as clove,
myrrh and mint.

Perhaps the best halitosis remedy is tongue brushing. Use a tongue
scraper or a soft-bristled toothbrush to dislodge odor-producing
bacteria.

Bad Breath: Solved!

We are always looking for ways to help people maintain fresh breath
and a couple of new products have come along that are extremely
effective. The first, Tri-Oral mouthrinse, claims eight-hour
effectiveness! Our experience has been that two to five hours is
probably more realistic, but even this is a significant advancement
over previously available rinses which gave you 15 to 45 minutes.
Tri-Oral is a two-component rinse which you mix together immediately
before using and rinse for 30 seconds to one minute. At present it is
only available through dentists..."

So, as you can see there are literally thousands of pages on Chronic
Halitosis on the Internet as this search will turn up:

There seem to be some agreement that the cause is either through body
chemistry that causes decay at the back of the tongue or can be a
result of other, seemingly unrelated medical conditions. Tongue
scraping has seemed to help many and some of the above treatments seem
well worth a try. You may wish to visit a doctor for a general
physical to rule out the medical conditions listed in these sites and
/ or a breath specialist.

I wish you luck on minimizing or eliminating this problem!

I trust my research will lead you to interesting reading and potential
cures for halitosis. If a link above should fail to work or anything
require further explanation, please do post a Request for
Clarification and I will be pleased to assist further.
