Hello joy1948-ga
I believe you are referring to gsulfah. gSulfah refers to a class
of drugs known as sulfonamides.
According to the MayoClinic.com
(http://www.mayoclinic.com/findinformation/druginformation/search.cfm
, search for gsulfonamidesh)
gSulfonamides (sul-FON-a-mides), or sulfa medicines, belong to the
family of medicines called anti-infectives.h
A common drug allergy is that to sulfa drugs.
Sulfonamides (SO2NH) are compounds containing sulfur (S). However, it
appears as though an allergy to sulfonamides is not the same as an
allergy to sulfur.
According to Teresa OfSullivan, PharmD, BCPS, University of
Washington School of Pharmacy
(http://eduserv.hscer.washington.edu/pharmacy/pharm561/Week%2010/drugallergy.pdf);
gAre patients with a gsulfa allergyh going to react to anything
with sulfur in it?
- You will encounter physicians and patients who will be confused by
this.
- Explain that the allergy is not to sulfur (S); it occurred with a
sulfonamide (SO2NH).
- Sulfates are not the same thing as a sulfonamide (i.e., SO4-
SO2NH).
- Sulfites are food preservatives. Some people (usually adults with
RAD) can experience bronchoconstriction after ingesting sulfites.
People with a sulfonamide gallergyh are at no higher risk for
reacting to sulfites than people without a sulfonamide gallergy.h
The mechanism for sulfite-induced bronchoconstriction is different
than the proposed mechanisms for sulfonamide reactions.h
According to the MayoClinic.com, gSulfa vs. sulfate: Allergy
concernsh (http://www.mayoclinic.com/invoke.cfm?objectid=0093B28E-3725-4C05-A5E858D1C7C6B87F):
gQ:
As an allergen, is sulpha the same as sulphate? Would someone who is
allergic to sulpha antibiotics also be allergic to food supplements
that contain copper sulphate or vanadyl sulphate? What are the signs
and symptoms of sulpha allergy? Is there a test for sulpha allergy?
A:
Sulfonamides, or sulfa (note the correct spelling) antibiotics, are
used to treat infections. Some people are allergic to sulfa
antibiotics. The most commonly prescribed sulfa antibiotic is
sulfamethoxazole (Gantanol). Sulfamethoxazole is also found in the
combination antibiotics Septra and Bactrim.
Sulfate, or sulphate, is a chemical term used to identify specific
salts containing sulfur. Sulfamethoxazole and other sulfa antibiotics
don't contain these salts.h
