I'm looking for a children's book I read sometime in the early 1970s.
It involved a cloud who studied to become a very large storm. It was
illustrated (I believe) with black and white pen and ink drawings. One
of the characters in the book was a retired ship's captain who lived
in a house constructed like a boat. It also seems to me that it was
set in the Catskills or some other mountain range. At the end of the
book is an illustration of the cloud disappearing into a clear sky.
I'm looking for a title, author, and publication information. I'd also
like to see the book's cover or a sample of an illustration to verify
it is the correct book. |

Hello Sgunn,
Could it be "Little Cloud" by Eric Carle?
For thorough descriptions, as well as images of cover and intro pages,
please see:
Amazon.com - Little Cloud

"The format is simplicity itself. Against a heavenly blue background,
a little cloud transforms itself. (...) When it joins up with the
other clouds, they turn dark together, and then it begins to rain."
I remembered the German title of this book from my childhood, and
that's how I located the English version. If this is indeed the one
you're looking for, I'd be happy to post an answer, and find
additional information and links for you.

Dear sgunn,
Hear is another possibility:
The Little White Cloud by Vivian Martin.
NY Vantage 1969.
Unfortunately, I was unable to find an image but I did email a
bookseller who has a copy and she told me that the cover has the heads
of three clouds on it. The illustrations are pen and ink drawings. The
story is about two clouds who have a baby who is unable to cry. He
finally learns how and he cries so hard that frogs have to wear life
jackets. There is no ship captain in the story.
Does this one ring a bell? If so, let me know and I'll post all of
the relevant ordering info. If you have any questions, please ask.
Thanks,
hummer

No. Whenever I've asked a librarian this question "Little Cloud" is
the book they try to point me to. But the plotline is different and
the illustrations in the book I'm thinking of are more sophisticated.

Hi sgunn,
Just to clarify, "The Little White Cloud" by Vivian Martin, which I
mentioned, is not the same book as "Little Cloud" by Eric Carle, which
j_philipp mentioned. There are pen & ink drawings in "The Little White
Cloud". Would you like me to try and find out more information about
the book or are you already sure it isn't the one you are looking for?
Thanks,
hummer

"The Little White Cloud" doesn't sound quite right either. Here's
another couple of details from inside the book: There is one
illustration of the cloud sitting in the sky reading books about
storms. The ending illustration has a last wisp of cloud with the
bowtie he wore attached -- while the former ship captain and a woman
are sitting outside enjoying the fair weather.
