Hello, Q1: Ground penetrating radar has been used in a variety of applications from underground archaeological mappings to hunting down Al-Qaeda weapon stashes burried underground in Afganistan. Groundpenetratingradar.com has a great section on ground penetrating radar applications outlining different uses such as: Underground Storage Tanks (USTs) Utility Location Buried Drums Concrete Inspection Sinkholes and Subsidence Grave Site Location Landfills and Burial Trenches Archaeological Studies Underground Structures Site Characterization Please see the link below for more information. Q2: A very good explanation about ground penetrating radar can be found on the article linked below. They show some sample graphs and pictures taken at different archaeology sites, and more day-to-day practical uses such as finding septic tanks and other underground structures. They also go over the benefits of using lower or higher frequency electromagnetic waves.
