Hi amsh,

I'm not posting this as an answer yet because it's not exactly the
solution you were looking for. If this is an acceptable answer to
your question then please let me know so I can post it.

Basically you're out of luck for networking the faxing print driver.
The driver, of course, isn't really connected to a printer, but just
acts like a printer to the software you're printing from. Because
it's not a printer you can't, under any circumstance I'm aware of,
install the fax driver on another machine and have it work properly.

However, there are solutions for doing what you want. You will need
some form of network fax software. The general way this works is that
you install the server on the machine with the fax modem, and install
the client application on any other machine on the network (in this
case the XP machine). The XP machine would then have a print driver
for faxing, but it would send the data via the network to the other
machine which would be the fax server.

There are various applications out there for doing this. Probably the
most common is Symantec Winfax Pro which is now at version 10.0. It's
available for purchase directly from Symatec here:
http://www.symantec.com/winfax/
You might also want to consider some shareware applications. ZetaFAX
is supposed to be quite nice, and it's available for a free trial
here: http://download.com.com/3000-2064-5379325.html?tag=lst-0-7
I have had some very favourable experiences with ActiveFax which is
available for trial here:
http://download.com.com/3000-2064-10150830.html?tag=lst-0-23 but it's
retail price of over $500 is a serious drawback if all you want is to
network your two machines.

I hope this doesn't discourage you. What you want to do is certainly
very doable, but for just two machines you might find that it's
cheaper to buy another fax modem and just share the phone line between
the two computers than it is to buy network fax software.

Best of luck,

Hibiscus

Hi again amsh,

I have done a little more investigation, and just to add another
little bit to the saga, there *is* a shared fax capability in Win 98,
however the client does not work under NT/2000/XP, which really makes
it fairly useless in your situation.

However, should you be interested in knowing how to set up the shared
fax server under 98, the steps are available under the 'Configuring a
Shared Fax Modem' section of the New Riders Inside Windows 98 page
here: http://www.cclub.metu.edu.tr/e-kitap/isletim_sistemleri/Inside%20Windows%2098/apa.htm

If the client machine was also running 98 then you could use this to
share the faxing capabilities of the first machine, but NT/2K/XP do
not allow access to the shared fax capabilities of the Windows
Messaging Server.

So, interesting as the whole exercise would be, this installation
wouldn't really help you for your situation. I still think that with
the price of modems these days you're probably best off just
purchasing a second fax modem to put in the XP machine.

I also found a few more possibilities for you as far as fax sharing
software. There is a page here:
http://www.slipstick.com/addins/services/groupfax.htm which lists
various applications that do the job.

In case you decide to go the route of using another modem, I dug
around to find something cheap that is bundled with the SuperVoice
software (which is what I'm guessing you're using based on the driver
name you provided). Of course, the fax software you already have
might very well work with another modem, but it is nice to be certain
that things will work by just buying a modem with the software
bundled. Searching through Yahoo Stores, I came accross toolspcs.com
that has a modem, listed here:
http://store.yahoo.com/toolspcs/inam56kpciwi.html for $14 plus
shipping.

PriceShock.com, which has a somewhat better looking web site, also has
a modem with the SuperVoice software, and with free shipping. It's
$23.62 and listed here: http://store.yahoo.com/priceshock/51010.html

Sorry this didn't get posted with the original answer. The fax
sharing capability of Win98 eluded me for a while, but I finally dug
up the right information.

Hope things work out for you,

Hibiscus
