It’s nice to see you here again.

I’ve prepared an assortment of answers to your question about the
difference between feelings and emotion from experts and from
individuals from many different walks of life as well.

We often use the terms emotions and feelings interchangeably.
Researchers Ekman & Friesen have identified six basic or core emotions
that are evident among all cultures: happiness, sadness, surprise,
disgust, anger, and fear.

In the article “What are Emotions”, a number of experts are
interviewed and they discuss the difference between feelings and
emotions offering various perspectives.

==============

J-P Du Preez is an EQ organizational consultant and a Senior Lecturer
at Potchefstroom University, South Africa when asked the difference
between emotions and feelings.

“A feeling is the response part of the emotion. Emotion is an
"umbrella term" which includes the situation, the
interpretation/perception of the situation and the response or feeling
related to the perception of the situation.”

==============

Eric Jensen, Ph.D. author of The Learning Brain answers the following
questions:

What are emotions?

“Biologically driven, cross-cultural responses to environmental
stimuli.”

What is the difference between emotions and feelings?

“Emotions are cross cultural – the same all over the world. Feelings
are a subset of all of our mind-body states (disappointment, hunger,
hope, etc. There are hundreds of them!). Feelings are a learned
response in the culture in which you grow up (the family, the peers,
the community, etc.)”

==============

Maurice Elias, Ph.D. is coauthor of Emotionally Intelligent Parenting,
and a professor of education at Rutgers University.

What are emotions?

“Emotions are human beings' warning systems as to what is really going
on around them. Emotions are our most reliable indicators of how
things are going in our lives. They are also like an internal
gyroscope; emotions help keep us on the right track by making sure
that we are led by more than cognition.”

What is the difference between emotions and feelings?
I have no idea (with a laugh) and you can quote me”

==============

Anabel Jensen, Ph.D. is the President of Six Seconds, coauthor of
Self-Science and Handle With Care, and a professor of education at the
College of Notre Dame.

What are emotions?

“Emotions are generated in the brain and the brain drives the body.”

What is the difference between emotions and feelings?

“Emotions are the raw material. They come with the DNA package.
Feelings are the interpretation of the raw data given by the brain and
reinforced by the individual's culture.”

==============

Jack Block, Ph.D. is professor of psychology at UC Berkeley and the
director of the Block Project, a longitudinal study of child
development said the following about the difference between emotions
and feelings:

“I do not see any deep difference between emotions and feelings except
that, definitionally, one might want to make feelings conscious and be
non-committal about the consciousness of emotions.”

==============

Daniel GilŽAdi, Ph.D. is a professor in organizational management at
Venezuela's IESA University and the director of an EQ development
organization called Proyectos LEAD.

What is the difference between feelings and emotions?

“E-Motion is preparing and anticipating action. Feelings are the
internal expression of the emotion and can be differentiated from body
sensations and states: "feeling cold" or "feeling depressed." The
emotion "behind" the feeling of depression: sadness or anger.”

Dr. Joseph LeDoux describes the difference between feelings and
emotions that his research has proven. “Feelings are a conscious
experience, while emotions originate from deep within the brain at an
unconscious level.”

From Feeling Our Way by Nemi Nath:

“There is a lot of confusion about the difference between feelings and
emotions. Emotions are part of the expression of the personality.
Feelings are an expression of the soul.

Emotions are the tension between the inside and the outside world. And
the equivalent of peace in the personality is comfort. Anything that
provides comfort is classified as a pleasant emotion and what creates
discomfort is unpleasant.

Feelings are from the inside world and they need to be felt. Our
feeling nature, our soul, is the bridge to the world of spirit. The
personality cannot connect with the spirit, with the Light and with
our infinite source. It is through our soul that the doorway is
opened.”

Walter Last in his article The World of Feelings and Emotions staes
the following:

'Feelings' in a general sense, are what we may feel in any part of our
body. These may be simple body sensations, such as hot or cold, pain,
a touch or else they may be feelings associated with emotions, such as
love or hate, joy or anger.

'Emotions', on the other hand, are feelings or reactions about someone
or something, and usually involving our ego. We are angry about
someone, afraid of something, in love with someone.

Feelings:

Feelings are certain natural, built-in sensations that we all have and
which are completely natural (and unavoidable) to experience. Some of
these feelings are pleasant, some are unpleasant. Some of the pleasant
ones are happiness, joy, love, and satisfaction. Some of the
unpleasant feelings are loneliness and rejection.

The common denominator of feelings is that they are a direct result of
the current situation. If you gain attention and approval from
someone, you will feel pleasure, joy, and happiness. (..) If you are
alone for a while, you will start to feel loneliness (you don't have
to wallow in it, however). If someone tells you they do not like you,
you will feel rejected and disapproved of. The situation exists and we
feel a sensation that is connected with it.”

Emotions:

“Emotions, on the other hand, are a secondary or indirect response to
our environment, based on how our inner thought processes respond to
it. A combination of thoughts that are in conflict with each other or
with reality produces a mental energy that is undirected or
misdirected. This mental energy cannot easily be used and therefore
produces a generally unpleasant sensation we call emotion. Typical
emotions are fear, anger, anxiety, and guilt.”

Jason Collins, a Contributing Columnist describes the difference
between feelings and emotions as well.

“There is a major difference between feelings and emotions. A feeling
is a type of emotional-esque sensory that is independent of the actual
emotions themselves. A feeling has no thought placed with it, and
there is not a judgment of a feeling being bad or good. One can feel
bad or one can feel good, and there are many variations thereof. When
you experience a situation, and the situation triggers a feeling, that
is normal. When you judge the situation with that feeling, the type of
judgment with the type of feeling creates the emotion.”

A difference between feelings and emotions was given:

“Feelings are long-term, while emotions were short time. You
immediately have a good or bad feeling after an observation.”

This opinion about the difference between feelings and emotions was
posted by Dr. Know on Jan, 12 2003:

“We try not to respond emotionally to situations. But we do want to
feel something when we make a choice. Emotionally choices are subject
to considerable extremes. Feelings are something that are more
consistent from moment to moment. What feels good and what feels bad
do not change that often.”

Is there a difference between emotions and feelings?

“Yes, but emotions deals with physiological and the feelings deals
with sensation. Emotion is a physiological reflex and feelings,
reflects our sensation. Emotion is a physiological arousal that
judges the levels of fear or anxiety. It also determines if we are
happy or unhappy. “

Ask a Philosopher - What is the difference between an emotion and a
feeling?

“I don't know of any philosophers who have distinguished between
feelings and emotions. However, it would make sense to say emotions
are focused feelings, and that all emotions are feelings, but not all
feelings are emotions. A few feelings which I would suggest are not
emotions because they are not focused are those of calm, anxiety and
general happiness or sadness.

(..)

If we accept that emotions are focused (actually, or as the content of
thought) on particular states of affairs outside the body, then
feelings can be characterised as unfocused internal states. A paradigm
for feeling is the physical feeling of pain. This has a cause inside
rather than outside the body. To be calm or happy in this sense, where
there is no external cause, can be taken as a feeling and contrasted
with emotions. On this distinction, friendship, as directed at another
person would be an emotion”
