Question ID: 149446
I have a computer problem. Most of the time, when I attempt to "shut
down" my computer, I get a blue screen error message, which denies the
computer from shutting down unless I do it manually. The message
comes up with the number, OE:0028:C002F74C. How do I eliminate this
problem with relative ease?

By chance, are you using and have recently installed either Norton
System Works or Norton AntiVirus 2003?

This message is a Fatal exception which is a General protection fault
that has failed and is most likely a hardware-software conflict of
which it is nearly impossible to point/blame in one direction of the
problem as the software makes the computer work and so dose the
hardware. Therefore it is a software conflict from a general approach
being that the hardware works first.
To fix this problem you should upgrade to the latest version of the
Operation system from the software Manufacture',and provided this has
been accomplished and the error is still received there is a hardware
compatibility problem with your software therefore is impossible to
fix this error.

Hi,

This message is really a generic one, and one cannot find the exact
source with ease. I would suggest you to check documents related to
shutdown problems at Microsoft knowledgebase:

http://support.microsoft.com/common/canned.aspx?R=d&H=Shutdown%20Articles&LL=kbwin98search%20or%20kbwin98sesearch&Sz=w98shutdown&CDID=EN-US-KB&LCID=1033

and try the relevant solutions.

Hope this helps.

As far as my experience and technical knowledge goes…. It because of 2
things.

1. There is some problem with your PSU(the internal power supply unit
of your computer 2. It could bean older version of OS (if you are
still using win98 please have a look at this URL:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q238096

Hope this helps!

There are at least two people who also own Compaq computers who have
this problem. Unfortunately, no particular solution is suggested. I
would advise phoning Compaq technical support, as I strongly suspect
that the problem is with their PCs.

See here for the two incidents:

Hi,
With no hard feelings for Microsoft ;-) I would suggest you to change
your operating system to atleast Windows 2000 or Windows XP if you
can. This problem is not new in Win ME.

i've had similar problems when mixing ram speed. you want to make
sure 1) that the biggest size ram module is on the first dim slot. 2)
all your ram is the same speed, pc100, pc 133, etc...i'm assuming it's
one of theses for the type of pc you described...if you continue to
have the problem, take out the 64mb, just leave the 256mb in, you
wont' notice much of a difference. also make sure your motherboard
can support the type of ram you put in.
hope it helps.

Check to see if the memory you purchased is high density and if your
motherboard supports it.
