how & where can i find cheap advice on melting, hot-rolling &
heat-treating stainless steel bars & rods ?

It would help to know the scope of your project. You can heat treat 6
inch long pieces of stainless steel by throwing them into a
self-cleaning oven. You can also purchase gigantic furnaces to do
large batches of 12 foot bars. Can you be more specific regarding your
information needs?

Ashwing13-ga,

Would a reference to a book on the heat treating and processing of
stainless steels fit your needs (It's about $200, but that price is
relatively cheap as far as this kind of information goes). It may not
cover melting though... that's really a problem of ladle chemistry.
