My apologies, I clicked on the wrong button and the answer posted
before I was finished.

Listed above are 5 difference references to articles discussing
various links between poplar education and social theory.

At its base, the link seems to follow the following pattern

popular education -> democratic activity (i.e. public participation)
-> social change

or popular education (causes) political participation by the education
group (women, poor, environmental and all types of public groups)
causes social change.

At the base of the various articles are questions of "theories of
education", i.e., how to people learn? what are the proper teaching
techniques....that provide an impetus for groups to become active in
the democratic process.

At the middle rung (participation) there are theories and hypothesis
regarding the problems and prospects effective group action and how
action does and does not end in social change.

I wanted to post this clarification now, and I will go back and try to
find a few more sources for you.
