gammie1224.. Thanks for your question. The woman you are referring to was Lady Augusta Ada Byron, the daughter of poet Lord Byron. She is considered the first computer programmer in that she developed the use of binary numbers. The language that was developed by the Department of Defense was known as ADA and was developed in 1979. For a biographical sketch of Byron, visit http://www.cs.yale.edu/homes/tap/Files/ada-bio.html For information on ADA, visit http://www.adahome.com/ Thanks again for your question and I hope the above information has been helpful. If you need any additional clarification, please let me know prior to rating my answer. A fascinating aspect of Ada Lovelace's life is that by virtue of pawning the Byron family jewels, she helped finance the various projects of Charles Babbage - arguably the inventor of the digital computer, albeit mechanical. He completed his "Difference Engine", which used the method of finite differences to calculate polynomial equations, but never completed his masterpiece "analytical engine". It is for this that Ada wrote the first programme. This machine was to be programmed with punched cards and it was envisioned that it would produce typeset output. Although Babbage was responsible for fostering huge advances in mechanical engineering in the mid 19th century (his chief engineer was Whitworth), the scope of his vision surpassed the capacity of the technology of the day. He is a fascinating and colourful figure from the history of computing. |
