I have received several (many) offers for a set of Norton Antivirus,
firewall and who knows what all. There are two prices $29.99 and
$34.95.

Are these legit and which one is better price?

Hello John,

Its good to have an opportunity to answer another question for you.

I recently bought Norton SystemWorks 2003 at Amazon for $2.99
delivered!! It was $59.95, free shipping, $30 Sysmantec Rebate, $20
Amazon rebate and a $10 special. I paid the tax only after rebates.

Checking there today you will find the price after rebates to be
$29.95 with free shipping. But these prices change often.

AntiVirus at Amazon is the same price, so the complete package is a
much better deal.

Whenever I search price on the Internet I use the following tools:

Fatwallet Forums
http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/categories.cfm?catid=18

Use the search box to type in symantec, for example to see threads
that relate. For example, I found this:

Best Buy has Systemworks 2003 for $59.99 with two $30 rebates, making
it free. Click on the link, and you'll see a link for the two
rebates...

One of the rebates requires that you upgrade from ANY prior product.
You can send in an old CD, disk, or title page from an old manual.

Another great resource is Anandtech Forums
http://forums.anandtech.com/categories.cfm?catid=40

Searching here for symantec brings up no results, but searching
Norton:
http://forums.anandtech.com/searchresults.cfm

Norton SystemWorks
59.99
- $30 Upgrade MIR (valid 9/2/02 - 12/31/03)
- $20 MIR (valid 9/12/02 - 3/31/03)
------------------------------
$9.99 AR

This is the pro version that includes norton Ghost, and it's retail
box.

This offer is also available at Fry's Bay Area.

The Outpost link is:

Two other resources that I use constantly are:

Pricescan
http://www.pricescan.com/

and PriceWatch
http://www.pricewatch.com/

One other note:

Be careful about the email offers you receive. Often, they are for
last year's version of the product. So buy from a reputable vendor.

I trust my research will help you find a great deal. If a link above
should fail to work or anything require further explanation, please do
post a Request for Clarification and I will be pleased to assist
further.

I live in Mexico and for that reason I asked for Norton from the
Internet--i.e. to down load it from the Internet.

Thanks for clearing this up.

Hi John,

I interpreted your question as purchase through the internet, not
download.

As far as I know, Symantec has demo versions which can be downloaded
from their site (www.symantec.com) but all other vendors, including
those you see in your email, ship either a full boxed product or just
the disc. These products are not usually available for download
delivery from a vendors site. Especially at the low prices you find
after the rebates.

Is there a problem with ordering from Amazon, for example, and having
them send the product to you through the mail? I would be surprised if
this was not a common practice for them.

If you like, I will search a bit further at your request. Just let me
know.

Hello again John,

Checking download +norton OR symantec +antivirus, I see that CNET, a
very reliable vendor, has last year's antivirus available for
download, but at $49.95:

http://download.com.com/3000-2239-10049182.html

And I am amazed to find that it can, indeed even be downloaded from
amazon!!

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006FI0T/ref=/002-3315216-4880068?v=glance&s=software

You can even print the rebate coupon from this page:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/software/B00006FI0T/rebates/01/002-3315216-4880068

Norton SystemWorks, which includes AntiVirus, can not be downloaded
from amazon, but must be shipped, probably due to the size of the
download.

For what it's worth, the emails you are receiving are likely for
pirated software. I get about five per day. If you look at the offer
page, it probably says something about "no retail packaging" and "no
printed manuals". This also means no legal license, no quality
control, no technical support, etc...

Internet News has an article about one instance of this particular
scam:
