Hi.

Yes, a girl can get pregnant while she is having her period, though
the chances are less than at most other times of her cycle. According
to the Childbirth by Choice Trust in Canada this can happen "If a
woman ovulates (releases an egg) early and if her period is long, some
fertile mucus could be present during the last days of her period.
Sperm could survive long enough in this mucus to meet the egg."

The fertility cycle goes like this, after a girl's period begins [the
start of her cycle] estrogen and progesterone hormone levels are low.
These increase over the next two weeks and peak at 14 days after her
period beins. At this hormone peak, an egg is realeased and travels
down the fallopian tubes to the uterus. This egg has roughly 12-24
hours to be fertilized before it dies. This is the time when it is
most likely for a woman to get pregnant. You must also keep in mind
that sperm can live for up to 3-5 days inside a woman's body so this
will increase her chances of pregnancy during this ovulation window,
even if you have sex before the egg is released. It is also more
likely that a girl can get pregnant during sex if she is a teenager or
has not been menstruating for a long time because she is more likely
to have irregular periods which can mean the egg is still capable of
getting fertilized even if she is bleeding.

Here are a few health website explanations for why this happens:

The experts agree that this occurence is unlikely, but still very
possible. The best way to determine if someone is pregnant, of course,
is to have a pregnancy test. Please let us know if you have any more
questions about this subject, thank you for writing.

You will find an answer to your question at
http://www.parentsplace.com/expert/midwife/qas/0,10338,166251_100296,00.html.
This is a Q&A about pregnancy and the qualified midwife here says:

"The simple answer to this is yes. If a woman has a short cycle --
typically 21 days from first day to first day -- then she is actually
ovulating on day seven of her cycle (the seventh day from the first
day of her period). Because some periods last that long, it is
possible that a menses may be just ending when she is ovulating.

Also, some bleeding may not be necessarily a real period.
Occasionally, ovulation can cause some spotting, which can be mistaken
for a period. A woman may think she is safe just at the most unsafe
time.

Bleeding may represent implantation of a fertilized ovum, too.

It is best to see a health care provider to get all of this
straightened out. Dates, ovulation and pregnancy are best handled with
you, your wife and your provider sitting together with a calendar
between you."

Hope this helps.
