Question ID: 155098
What is the use of Windows 98 operating systems expected to be in the
fall of 2003 for _corporations_ in the following regions: North
America, Europe, Asia Pacific and rest of world? What is the use of
Windows 98 operating systems expected to be in the fall of 2003 for
_educational institutions_ in the following regions: North America,
Europe, Asia Pacific and rest of world?

I am familiar with information publicly available on MSFT's site about
their support plans and release dates, but that does not help in
determining actual use - I'd like to see 3rd party sources estimating
this, thanks.

I have found usage data for win98 for regions of the world for Fall
2002 (actual use, not projections for later on in 2003!) However, the
data are not broken out by sectors such as corporate use and
educational use. for instance, Win 98 use in different European
countries ranges from about 25% to more than 40% of all systems.

I'll keep looking for more detailed information (as will other
researchers, I'm sure), and for future projections. But you may want
to consider reposting this question at a lesser dollar amount, and
making use of the information that seems to be available, rather than
waiting for info (no matter how desirable) that may simply not exist.

SMorrow --

The two companies that have tracked and forecast market shares for
operating systems for a long time are IDC and Gartner Group's
Dataquest unit. Their forecasts for 2003 don't seem to have made it
into the press.

There are a couple of options for you, including contacting the
companies directly about their services. Pafalafa-GA's suggestion is
also excellent.

Best regards,

Many thanks to the researchers for their comments - you're right that
I will probably not find this information in the exact form I'm
requesting, particularly regarding educational use. Thanks for the
helpful pointers - much appreciated.

I stumbled to an article titled Windows 98 Rules the Web here:

http://www.winplanet.com/winplanet/newsarchives/1063/1/

And found links to these websites:

http://websidestory.com

http://www.statmarket.com

You might wanted to come visit those websites. As for the article
itself, the author email is right on the page.

I myself have browse those two webs. And the one I recommend to you is
the StatMarket. It's a subdivision of WebSideStory. I've reviewed the
StatMarket. And I think it's good because it covers all over the world
(254 countries) and also industry catagories.

The downside is that the website itself needs subscription. Either
Annual or Snapshot it's your choice :) And they also provide
discounts, because you're searching for more than 3 countries.

Good Luck,
Ephi :)
