Question ID: 155187
Can I install multiple USB Sportster modems (model 5633) on one
Windows 2000 Server? If so, how do I do it?

I have tried to do this but Windows sees only one modem - the other
modem is ignored.

How are you connecting the two modems? Are either of them going
through a USB hub? Do both modems work when connected independently?
Theoretically, Windows 2000 Server should see both modems and allow
you to use them, so there must be some sort of problem with the
configuration or setup of the devices (or could be a compatibility
issue).

Actually, I tried them in two ways:

1) I connected the two modems directly to the PC.
2) I connected the two modems to a USB hub.

Both did not work while both modems work if there is only one modem
connected to the computer.

By the way, the indicator light turns on only on one of the modems
when both modems are connected.

What is the exact model # of this modem? (Ex: USR5633DES) It should be
on the modem somewhere.

is it always the same modem that does not work? have you tried each
modem by themselves? perhaps it could be that one of the modems simply
does not work.

I'm unable to easily locate your model on either the 3COM or USR
website. I'm going to recommend looking for a firmware update for the
modem to see if it corrects the issue. I've read of a similar problem
with another USR USB modem and Microsoft's only solution was a
firmware update. It's obviously something going on with the device
itself if you're not having any other USB related issues. You could
also try updating the BIOS on your motherboard, but I wouldn't think
that would probably make much difference.

I think the problem you are running into is that Windows does not
natively support a USB modem. It is up to the manufacturer's driver to
support such things as multiple modems. My suggestion is to not use
multiple USB modems (use PCI instead) or use ones from different
manufacturers (using different drivers).

Sportster is US Robotics home product. Being a home product, they can
justify not supporting multiple USB modems.

Unplug your modems in USB ports and install your modem drivers.
If complete install, plug your first modem W2K Server sees your first modem.
after plug your second modem.
