I am looking for a short list (3 or more) of songs about classified
ads, or where classified ads figure semi-prominently in the lyrics. I
will need to be able to download a good-quality MP3 of it. (The music
will be cleared and used legally.) Prefer songs by Canadian artists,
but that's not 100% critical.

Do you actually need links to the MP3s, or would the list of song
titles be sufficient? Presumably many of the MP3s posted on the Web
are posted without clearance or by persons who obtained clearance from
someone else -- so would you prefer the names of the publishers of the
songs or the labels that released the recordings, assuming that such
information is available?

Incidentally, I can think of one song right off the bat, and I assume
that there are others.

Hi Scott,
I'd prefer links to the actual MP3s, but if it's just a songlist, I'd
probably need 8-10 such songs to track down and preview through the
licencing library I have access to.

Hi jhabley-ga,

This answer took a fair amount of time to chase, but there isn't a lot
of writing required to present the results. I found nine songs that
meet your requirements. Here they are along with links to the lyrics
of each:

"Classified" by C.W. McCall on the Wolf Creek Pass album
http://www.narrowgauge.org/4x4/cw_pages/lyrics/wcp/classified.html

"Classified" by Andre Nickatina on the Tears of A Clown album
http://display.lyrics.astraweb.com:2000/display.cgi?dre_dog_andre_nickatina%2E%2Etears_of_a_clown%2E%2Eclassified

"Classified Ad" by Dave Grossman in the Walking On Windows album

"Want Ads" by Taylor Dayne from the Tell It To My Heart album

"Want Ads" by Honey Cone on their Greatest Hits album

"Single White Female" by Chely Wright from the Single White Female
album
http://maxpages.com/allcountry/Chely_Wright

"Extra Extra" by Immature on The Journey album
http://www.lyricsdownload.com/data/i/immature/immature_extra_extra.php4

"Personals" by Alex Cima on his Worlds of Love album
http://www.neuronmusic.com/text.html#personals

"Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes on his Greatest Hits
album
http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~shuppr/lamusic/pina.htm

In addition to those songs, I found tunes from a number of other
artists that mentioned classified ads, but did not feature them as
lyrical focal points. Artists with such a classified ad mention
included: Bruce Springsteen, Nanci Griffith, Goodie Mob, Better Than
Ezra, Sheryl Crow, Silhouettes, Warren Zevon, MXPX, and Blue Oyster
Cult.

I trust this list will be sufficient to your needs (although I'd be
surprised if this question didn't get a couple more interesting
suggestions in the Comments area). If you have any questions about my
answer or any of the included links, please use the "Clarify Answer"
feature before rating it, and I'll get right back to you.

Thanks for your question,

ericynot-ga

Thanks for your generous rating and tip. You are one of the loyal GA

Question: I noticed an expired question you posted back on 1/17
looking for a Canadian artist singing about mistaken identity. Did you
already find an answer to that one? If not, I'd be pleased to look
into it for you - you could repost it with my name in the subject line
(I enjoy chasing after the music-related questions) if you still are
interested.

Hope to see you here again soon,

ericynot-ga

p.s. I'm a little disappointed we didn't get another "classifieds"
song or two suggested in the comments section - guess we found most of
'em :)

Hi Ericynot-ga,

No need for the mistaken identities theme any more, but thanks. :)

Outstanding! Tons of work done and the tunes are just what I was
after. I've tipped to bring it up to double-digits. :)
