I need to find out the market share of retailers who sell recorded
music (i.e. CD's). This includes both specialty music retailers (e.g.
Tower Records, Wherehouse, Trans World) and general retailers (Best
Buy, Wal-Mart, Target). The dollar value of music sold by each would
be great if possible, but relative market share would be acceptable as
well.

Information for 2002 would be ideal, but 2001 would be acceptable as
well.

If this information is only available from a paid source that you
don't have access to, I would accept an answer with information on
the source and how much it would cost to obtain the information.
Of course I would much prefer the actual information.

Resources that may be useful:
National Association of Recording Merchandisers: www.narm.com
VNU, operators of SoundScan, which is the source of data for the
Billboard charts: www.vnu.com (no free data here that I can see)
Recording Industry Association of America: www.riaa.com (the site has
a "consumer profile" with market share by categories, e.g. "record
store", "other store", "record club", "Internet", but I need numbers
for individual retailers).

I should have mentioned that I'm interested in US market share.

Another possible source of information is Billboard Magazine. One of
their reporters, Ed Christman, specifically covers music retail.

I have spoken with Nielsen SoundScan who told me that the data I'm
looking for is not available through them. The have the data but due
to confidentiality agreements they don't release it except in
aggregate form (i.e., units sold by mass merchants vs. chain stores
vs. online, etc., but not units spold by specific retailers). So it
looks like this question is probably not answerable.
