Hello Blue -

Do you mean you want to be able to adjust your settings so if you
click on a file it places the full path and name in the address
section so you can then highlight the address section, use Ctrl C to
copy it to the clipboard?

If so, I can direct you to what settings to make.

Sorry to be a little slow with the clarification. I think Sereneta
has the best description. Imaginge that you are creating document
that references files on a hard drive; if you have lots of file names
with long paths to enter it gets pretty tedious. What I have been
doing is to set the explorer to display the full path - which I then
copy to the clipboard and paste in my document. Then I right click on
the document & choose rename, cntl-C to grab that and paste it at the
end of the file path. I was looking for a one step method to do this.

Thanks,
George

Hi again, Blue ...

You said you use the "Classic Windows Explorer" in Windows 2000
(Win2K). I use the classic explorer, too, in Win2K Pro.

Please note, you have to have a version of Internet Explorer installed
on your computer, too, (they rely on some of the same
functions/files). The association of at least having Internet Explorer
installed started with Win95, and Win2K comes with IE 5.0 on the
installation disk. Updating to IE 6.x will not harm the settings.

Assuming your classic windows looks vaguely like the one on this Web
page (even though this is for Win95) ...

http://www.windows-help.net/windows95/start-16.shtml .... scroll
down a bit to see the screen shot of Explorer.

If it's not, or if yours is almost like that, here's what you should
make sure is checked in Windows 2000:

1. Click On View >> Toolbars
      Check Standard Buttons
      Check Address Bar

2. Click On View >> Explorer Bar
      Check Folders

3. Click on View >> Details (this works on mine, too, if I click on
'list' as well).

4. Still on View >>
     Check Name, Type, Size, Modified

5. Click on Tools >> Folder Options >> Click on the "View" Tab.
      Under Files and Folders,
Check Display the full path in the address bar.

6. You can also click on Remember each folder's view settings so you
don't have to keep changing it.

When you click on a file in the right pane so it is highlighted, it
will put the full path in the Address bar. You can then click on the
address bar and use Ctrl C to copy it to the clipboard - and save
yourself some time and trouble.

Search terms used:
  setting Windows Explorer

This should set it so you can just copy off the address bar, which you
clicked above in No. 1.

Thanks for the opportunity to be of help!
Serenta

Just a note - I haven't had a chance to download IE 6, but what you
suggest looks good. Will download and rate answer over the weekend.

I have downloaded 6.0 and am using it, and have changed my settings as
you have described, but I still have to do the "two step" method to
grab the full path and the file name. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

George

when you made the changes ...

did the address bar appear? how much of your Windows Explorere (file
manager) looks like the illustration?

Actually, I was seeing the full path all along. What I do not see
even after making the changes you have suggested is the document name
along with the full path in the address bar.
My Win explorer looks quite similar to the illustration, but since
WIN95 is considerably different from WIN2K, it obviously is not
exactly the same.

Do you think "hammer-ga" is right in that this can't be done in WIN2K?
Thanks,
george

Actually, I am using Win2K Pro
and I get the entire path, for example:
D:\serenata-nu\about\graphics\header1_1a.gif

in my address bar ... and that enables me to copy the address bar
using Ctrl C and paste the address wherever.

To achieve that, I followed the steps I'd set out above, so I really
do not understand why it isn't working for you.

Sorry about that,
Serenata

I still can't get this to work as described, but I appreciate the
effort the researcher put in.

This can't be done easily. There are kludgy tricks, like dragging into
a command line window then copying from there. There are also lots of
third-party utilities that you can download which will add this
function to your right-click menu. There is not, however, a keystroke
or menu choice built into Explorer that will let you do this.

If I am correct in understanding what you are asking, then all you
would have to do is this:
-In "My Computer" or Windows Explorer, click the TOOLS pull-down menu,
and select the FOLDER OPTIONS choice
-Click the VIEW tab
-Check the box that says DISPLAY FULL PATH IN ADDRESS BAR
-You can also the check the box that says ....IN TITLE BAR if you want
the path in the title bar, which is the top, colorful header box at
the very top of the box.

Is this what you were asking?
