I have a mobile phone SIEMENS-S35 and I want to use it as modem to
connect to the internet through my laptop: ACER travelmate 522TXV. The
connection betwwen the mobile and the laptop is done via Infrared
connection. The internet connection is dial-up. I already have an
account with ISP. I have downloaded and installed the driver for my
mobile's modem and I attempted to connect but I get a message on my
mobile saying "not applied for" I don't know what does that mean. Do I
have to set up my mobile for this connection ? If yes how do I do
that?

Hello yiorgos,

Thank you for your question.

I just experienced the same problem, though my error message was
different.

I have a PocketPC and a Nokia cell phone with built-in modem. I have
dial-up access through an ISP and when I use the Compact Flash card
modem with my PocketPC, the connection works flawlessly and as
expected.

I also downloaded and setup the necessary connection to communicate
from my PocketPC to the Nokia via infrared and this connection was
acknowledged by the Nokia, but I could not connect to my ISP by trying
to dial in to a local access number.

Calling my cell phone service provider I learned that a data
connection can not be made in this manner. The cell service provider
offers different accounts for voice and/or data and in order to use
the modem in the cell phone for a wireless Internet connection, it
must be done by using the data service of the cell service provider,
not a dial-up ISP.

So, in order for this to work for you, you must subscribe to a data
service offered by your cell service provider, such as AT&T, Verizon,
Sprint etc.

These services may and may not be available for you particular model
of phone, to further compound the situation. For example, I have a
Nokia 3360 phone, which is CDMA - a type of cell service - and I use
AT&T Wireless. AT&T only offers data service on their GSM phones,
which is a different type of cell technology and requires a phone
which is GSM. Just to note, GSM has been the default standard in many
other countries in Europe and th Far East for many years now, but is
just becoming the standard in the US at this time. It requires
different cell equipment at you service provider and at the moment,
nationwide coverage for GSM service is much less than coverage for
other, older US digital cell coverage such as CDMA and TDMA. So that
even with this service, you will not be able to make a data connection
in as many US locations using GSM as the older digital technologies.
Providers are adding coverage areas almost daily, however, and at some
point in the near future, GSM will be the US default and other types
of digital coverage will eventually disappear. It is another case of a
lack of standards in US technologies - much like Beta and VHS tapes.

I checked your Siemens S35 and found that it does not appear to be
sold in the US, so I assume that you are not trying to use this in the
USA. It is a Dual Band EGSM 900 / GSM 1800 so that should not present
a problem. Details on the phone can be found at this Siemens page:

has downloadable documents for help using this phone as an IR modem
with various operating systems including:

Modem installation for Palm Organizer (infrared)

And last, since you did not mention what cellular provider you use, I
have included links to my providers page, AT&T to show their optional
services for data on GSM phones, which is the piece of the puzzle I
believe you are missing:

http://www.attws.com/mmode/plans/data.jhtml

As I mentioned, in order to use my phone as a data modem, one of these
plans would be required. It would also allow my phone to access WAP
data as a stand alone device.

In closing, I think that calling your cell provider and subscribing to
a similar data service will solve your problem. Should this not be the
case, please provide me with additional details via a Request for
Clarification and tell me where you are located and who is you
cellular provider and I will be happy to research your question
further.
