Question ID: 155707
I want articles where David B. Case, M.D. of New York Physicians is
quoted, and how to locate them. Particularly want consumer media, like
NY Times, other newspapers, and magazines. Also want titles of
articles by him published in medical and professional journals. Only
want material dated January 2000 to present.

Hi curiousmind,

Question: Are you looking for citations to articles, or full-text of
the articles themselves? Most newspapers (including the NYTimes) do
not offer online access to their archived (i.e., old) articles on the
web for free. I might be able to find some articles in paid databases
and give you citations, which you could then track down through your
local public or academic library (either of which might have access to
online full-text databases). Would this be sufficient?

Citations for both articles in which Dr. Case was quoted, and the
names of professional journals where he has published. The information
is to use in a bio in a book proposal I am writing. My objective is
to show:
 - That he is a respected authority who is knwon to the public, by
citing articles in the consumer press where he was quoted
 - That is eminent by virtue of where he has published for his peers

Only work since 2000 is relevant.

Hi curiousmind,

Well, I'm having no luck finding either articles by him or in which he
is quoted, using the date restrictions you gave me. I looked in the
standard medical/health databases as well as our generalized news &
magazine sources. These are also the ones that your local public
library might have available, depending on where you live. Your best
bet along that avenue is to contact your library and see what services
they offer. Note that there are multiple people named "David Case" -
including a law professor, a recorder of audiobooks, and a developer
in the southwest.

It looks like Dr. Case's publishing heyday was in the mid 1980s, and
that he's really settled down since then. He had quite a few articles
and some books up until about 1998, but the only paper I've found by
him is the one I already gave you from the American Journal of
Cardiology. Remember that a physician's reputation is built up over
decades, and is not based on just the last few years' worth of output.

I did find a page describing Dr. Case at New York Physicians
(http://www.newyorkphysicians.com/doctors/case.asp). If you would
like, I could contact him and ask for a CV of publications and places
he's been quoted (most doctors keep a file like this for themselves).

Good point about reputation building over time. Would you please send
what you found starting back in the 80's. We are talking solely about
David B. Case, M.D.,currently affiliated with Columbia-Presbyterian
Hospital as an associate professor.

In my preliminarly search, I found the page from NY PHysicians, whick
is Dr. Case's practice.

I am resistant to using the Internet for searches, as I don't feel
very competent figuring out the criteria. Your citing what I found on
my own boosts my confidence. Also demonstrates the value of paying a
pro like you, considering on how long it took me to dig up this small
amount of data, which included learning how many David Cases there
are, and what difference one letter makes.

Thank you,

Dana

Hi curiousmind -

Me again. I've compiled a list of nearly 50 articles authored or
co-authored by Case since 1980. These are in scholarly journals such
as the New England Journal of Medicine, and most are from the early
1980s.

I am still having problems finding popular press materials quoting him
- and so have sent him an email asking for help. You never know if
people will write you back (my experience is that it's a 50/50
chance). If he doesn't, what would you like me to do? I think I've
pretty well covered the eminent by virture of where he has published"
part of your question, but clearly haven't got the "known to the
public" part of it.

I agree that providing the list of articles for Journals you have
compliced meets that part of the search. Hope Dr. Case replies to your
direct email query. If he does, that will be perfection, whatever the
response. If there is ultimately nothing from him, I agree to call
this search complete.

Look forward to your next posting.

Hi there -
Just wanted to let you know that I haven't forgotten you. I haven't
heard back from Dr. Case yet. How long would you like to wait? In my
experience most people either respond to email immediately or not at
all. Just let me know how to proceed and I'll be happy to comply. ;)

Hi there curiousmind –

I have not heard back from my email to Dr. Case, and in my experience
I rarely do if not within the first few weeks. Sometimes people are a
little spooked by getting email from a third party, so if you would
like to email him yourself you might get better results.

In terms of what databases might or might not be available at your
local library, it depends in large part on where you live. More than
half of US states now have some sort of consortial, state-wide program
that gets fairly high-powered databases into public and school
libraries. Unfortunately, Lexis Nexis is indeed a very expensive
service, so luciaphile is probably correct that you will need to go to
a university to search it. However, other options such as the EBSCO
databases will often get you what you need (just not in this case
where most info came from the NYTimes). The Web of Science, which I
used for the scholarly journals, is probably also a
university-library-only database.

Yours, librariankt

Using a search of the Lexis Nexis Academic database, I did find the
following possibilities:

The Record, June 1, 1990; FRIDAY; ALL EDITIONS, NEWS; Pg. A04, 428
words, MARCOS COLLAPSES DURING TRIAL; DIGESTIVE DISORDER POSSIBLE,
United Press International, NEW YORK
“Dr. David Case, Marcos's personal physician, said she had suffered
stomach pains and had vomited blood clots. He said her illness was not
related to her high blood pressure. "At the present time she is in
stable condition, is alert, and doing well," Case said.”

Collapses During Her Federal Fraud Trial, By CRAIG WOLFF
“Dr. David Case, an internist at the hospital, said the incident was
unrelated to Mrs. Marcos's high blood pressure, which he has been
treating since April. He added that her illness yesterday might have
been stress-related.”
“Dr. Case said yesterday that Mrs. Marcos had been vomiting recently.
''We're concerned about the vomiting of blood this morning,'' he said.
''It could be stress-related.''”
There’s also a photo of Case and a Dr. Kuehl

The New York Times, June 2, 1990, Saturday, Late Edition - Final,
Section 1; Page 32, Column 1; Metropolitan Desk, 187 words, Marcos
Said to Be Recovering After Collapse
“An internist at the hospital who has been treating Mrs. Marcos for
high blood pressure, Dr. David Case, said she had erosive gastritis, a
buildup of stomach acid.”

The New York Times, June 10, 2001, Sunday, Late Edition - Final,
Section 9; Page 11; Column 3; Society Desk,  231 words,  WEDDINGS;

to Thayer Stimson Case, a son of Dr. Jean Case and Dr. David Case of
Bronxville, N.Y.”
“The bridegroom, 25, graduated from Kenyon College and is a candidate
for a master's degree in social work at Columbia. His mother is the
corporate medical director of the Union Carbide Corporation in
Danbury, Conn. His father, an internist and cardiologist, is a
clinical associate professor of medicine at the Weill Medical College
of Cornell University in Manhattan.”

The New York Times, October 10, 2002, Thursday, Late Edition - Final,
Section G; Page 7; Column 1; Circuits, 718 words, Palm-Size
Ultrasound Scans Safely in a Flash, By MICHEL MARRIOTT
“Ultrasound makes an ideal screening tool, said Dr. David B. Case, a
New York City internist who has been among the first doctors to use
the iLook. "It is easy to use, portable and offers zero risks," he
said. In the few weeks in which Dr. Case has tried the device in his
Madison Avenue practice, he said its compact size and ease of use have
helped him integrate it into physical examinations.”
“Dr. Case noted that unlike larger imaging systems, the iLook, which
is battery powered, takes only five seconds to boot up and use.”
There’s a photo of Case with the iLook.

And here are articles for the last 20 years (or so) that I found
through a search of the ISI Web of Science (Science Citation Index).
I used the Web of Science because it is easier to restrict results by
institution than in other databases. However, you will get similar
(if not the same) results if you do a search of PubMed MEDLINE, which
is free on the web: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi.
You will want to search for something like (“Case DB”[AU] AND
hypertension), as there appears to also be a veterinarian named DB
Case.

Greetings Curiousmind! I am posting this as a comment because I don't
believe my results are as complete as you are looking for (if I am
incorrect in my assumption, let me know and I'll be happy to post my
research as an answer). Your best bet would be to join the pay site,
Lexis Nexis to attempt to locate this information. I searched for
free public documents and found the following where he was quoted:

"When you begin to think of what the potential cost-benefit of a
machine like this is, the first, of course, is how this will benefit
patients in terms of their health. Even if, even now, having found one
kidney cancer and one major abdominal aortic aneurysm, we could
justify purchasing the machine for just that alone...what is really
quite the turning point is that these machines in fact are really
relatively a tenth of the cost of the full-size machine and the
maintenance is very small." David B. Case, MD, New York, NY

In addition, PubMed MEDLINE (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/) has the
following article for a "DB Case":

American Journal of Cardiology 2000 May 15;85(10):1265-8
"Possible role of increased blood viscosity in the hemodynamics of

Using google, I found the two items you did. The quote is not from
consumer media, eg NY Times. They are
1. An endorsement of machinery he uses, on the manufacturer's website.
2. A web discussion any doctor can join, ie. no indication of
prestigious standing either within the profession of to the public.

The journal of cardiology citation is useful.

I do not have access to Lexis/Nexis. It is too expensive, and I don't
have need for it very often. Forgive my ignorance, but at the public
library, can I use it for a search?

Thank you.

Hi curiousmind-ga,

Most public libraries probably will not offer access to Lexis-Nexis as
it's quite the pricey little database. You might have better luck at
an academic or law school library. Your public library probably does
have access to at least one periodical/newspaper database.
