Looking for specialized first, second and third grade level curriculum
for children with autism. Curriculum should be appropriate for
autistic children with cognitive ability ranging from 7-12 years of
age and expressive language ability around 3 years of age. I need both
EXPRESSIVE language curriculum and ACADEMIC curriculum. Preferably,
the curriculum should have documented scientific research to
demonstrate validity or some legitimate source to validate their
method. (Note: I do not need testing materials or basic discrete trial
ABA programs, like Catherine Maurice.) The children who need the
curriculum are between the ages of 5-12, very smart and have low
verbal ability and are in a public school. I know this is very
specific and may be challenging to meet all of the criteria. Several
sources may be needed to meet these unique needs.

Hello again cleds,

I’ve spent some time researching your question and I think I have a
pretty good understanding of the difficulties of finding what you
want. You said:

“Preferably, the curriculum should have documented scientific research
to demonstrate validity or some legitimate source to validate their
method.”

My research shows that there are a lot of controversial methods in
treating and educating autistic children. This site from the Surgeon
General reviews and evaluates some approaches.
http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/mentalhealth/chapter3/sec6.html#autism
Please clarify which of the methods listed under the “Treatment”
heading would meet your needs. I'd also like to know if there are
other modalities that fit your requirements.

Also, do you want specific products or would detailed descriptions of
classroom and teaching methods meet your needs?

I look forward to helping you with your search and I’m eager to get
your clarifications so I’ll know how to proceed. Thanks very much.

>YES, I AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH THIS INFO. I AM A BEHAVIOR ANALYST AND
HAVE USED LOVAAS TYPE DISCRETE TRIAL INSTRUCTION AND OTHER BEHAVIORAL
METHODS FOR TEACHING VERY YOUNG CHILDREN WITH AUTISM FOR MANY YEARS.
WHILE I AM VERY INTERESTED IN BEHAVIORAL METHODS I DON'T WANT TO LIMIT
The SEARCH TO ONLY BEHAVIOR ANALYTIC METHODS. FOR EXAMPLE, I AM
INTERESTED IN LEARNING IF TEACCH HAS ANY CURRICULUM AVAILABLE FOR
PURCHASE.

"DIRECT TEACHING" IS A WELL RESEARCHED BEHAVIOR ANALYTIC METHOD I HAVE
CONSIDERED USING AND ADAPTING. HOWEVER, THERE IS SO MUCH INFO ON
DIRECT TEACHING THAT IT IS VERY TIME CONSUMING TO SEARCH THROUGH IT
ALL. I NEED TO KNOW IF IT HAS BEEN USED WITH SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN WITH
AUTISM TO TEACH ACADEMICS AND/OR EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE AND WHERE I CAN
BUY CURRICULUM AND RECEIVE TRAINING.

I RECEIVED AND EMAIL FROM A COLLEAGUE TONIGHT WHO RECOMMENDED "EDMARK

POPULATION, AND HOW TO BUY IT WOULD BE HELPFUL. THEY COME IN COMPUTER
MODULES BUT I NEED REGULAR CURRICULUM AS WELL SO IT CAN BE INTERACTIVE

SPECIFIC PRODUCTS BECAUSE I NEED A CURRICULUM TO FOLLOW FOR SEVERAL
YEARS OF A CHILD'S EDUCATION. IT MAY BE HARD TO FIND SO A LIST OF
CRITICAL SOCIAL/EXPRESSIVE LANGAUGE SKILL TARGETS FOR SCHOOL AGED
CHILDREN WITH AUTISM WOULD APPROPRIATE TOO. I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN
RESEARCH PAPERS AND/OR TEACHING METHODS DESCRIBING HOW REGUALR
EDUCATION CURRICULUM HAS BEEN ADAPTED. I HOPE TO AVOID COMPLETELY
REINVENTING THE WHEEL FOR EACH NEW CHILD AND HAVE A GOOD VALID -
TESTED CURRICULUM. THE PRODUCT IS MORE THE GOAL BECAUSE THE SCHOOL I
AM CONSULTING TO, FOR THESE KIDS, HAS NOTHING IN TERMS OF CURRICULUM.
THEY ALSO HAVE DEMANDING PARENTS WHO WANT TO KNOW WHAT I CHOOSE TO

Hi,
Yes, I know it's a tall order. (That's why I need the help and chose
100$) Good luck. Printed Curricuum and/or software. If I had some time
I would proably search some journals too. Exceptional Children; The
Journal of Autism and Developmental Disabilities; Journal of Applied
Behavior Analysis to name a few. I know the National Rearsch Council
wrote a book called "Educating Children with Autism." I don't know if
it has any specific curriculum mentioned though.

Good luck to you.

Hello cleds,

Well, that was quite a project. You’re right in saying that there’s an
overwhelming amount of material on autism. I’m surprised that there
isn’t very much for teaching school-age autistic children. Most of the
resources are dedicated to very young children. Nevertheless, I’ve
been able to collect a library of materials that should give you a
good overview of current theories, practices and vendors. I’ve tried
to gather specific products and curricula so you won’t have to
“reinvent the wheel.” I’ve grouped the resources I found under the
headings of your questions. I hope this will give you a good start on
coming up with your proposal to your clients. Please ask for
clarification if any of this is unclear. I wish you well on your
proposal.

==========================================================

I received and e-mail from a colleague tonight who recommended "Edmark

population, and how to buy it would be helpful. They come in computer
modules but I need regular curriculum as well so it can be interactive

I would prefer specific products because I need a curriculum to follow
for several years of a child's education. It may be hard to find so a
list of critical social/expressive language skill targets for school
aged children with autism would appropriate too. I would be interested
in research papers and/or teaching methods describing how regular
education curriculum has been adapted. I hope to avoid completely
reinventing the wheel for each new child and have a good valid -
tested curriculum. The product is more the goal because the school I
am consulting to, for these kids, has nothing in terms of curriculum.
They also have demanding parents who want to know what I choose to
teach their children and why. (and so they should)

A well-designed study of a psychosocial intervention was carried out
by Lovaas and colleagues (Lovaas, 1987; McEachin et al., 1993).
Nineteen children with autism were treated intensively with behavior
therapy for 2 years and compared with two control groups. Followup of
the experimental group in first grade, in late childhood, and in
adolescence found that nearly half the experimental group but almost
none of the children in the matched control group were able to
participate in regular schooling. Up to this point, a number of other
research groups have provided at least a partial replication of the
Lovaas model (see Rogers, 1998).

Hi czh-ga,
I have not had time to look at this in depth but at a glance it looks
great. Thanks very much. I'll check back once I have had time to look
thoroughly just to let you know how I found the resources. Thanks

Can I request you specifically again? I will proabbly do more of this.

Susan,
I'm glad you like what I've found. You're in a very challenging field.
It looks like providing materials for school age autistic children is
an emerging market. Most schools seem to be grappling with how to meet
legal requirements with a set curriculum when these children clearly
need individual attention. I'd be delighted to work with you again.
Yes, you can request me. Here's an example.

HI again,
This was really very very excellent. I was up unti 3AM and I have a
lot of great resources now. Do I still hae time left with you? If so I
have one question. In one of the wonderful pieces of information you
sent me there was something called: "Game Oriented Activities for
Learning." It was with Edmark but I think it was just for reading. I
want to know how I can learn more about that in AND if they have game
oriented activities for learning expressive language as well.

I have another questions too but it is unrelated. Let me know if you
can answer this or if i have to pay more. I want to offer service as a
gardian ad litem for the family court system in Massachusetts. I need
to know if there is a certification board, a training offered, and if
there are specific qualifications, and how I can get my foot in the
door. (Essentially a judge or lawyer would contact me if they needed
an expert for a child with autsim involved in a family court issue.)

Thanks

Hello cleds,

I’m so glad to hear that you found the research useful. I’ve looked up
some additional information about Edmark. Apparently they’ve been
acquired by Riverdeep. I suggest that you check out the Riverdeep
catalog for additional materials that might meet your needs. I’ve
included links to two Edmark Special Nedds language learning products
but I think they might have additional materials that might be of
interest to you. I’ve also done some research on other publishers of
expressive language learning materials and discovered that there isn’t
much available, but I’ve included what I found.

I’m gratified that you found my work and the Google Answers service
helpful. I suggest that you post a new question for your interest in
becoming a “guardian ad litem.” I’ll be happy to answer it or there
might be other researchers who would have specialized knowledge. We
look forward to answering many more questions for you.

I wish you well in all yourprojects.

There is a new book out called Autism in the School Aged Child. It is

It is easy to use and a practical resource for teachers and parents.

It is not really for curriculum, but it has great strategies for other
issues. Check it out.
