I want to learn to play the guitar. Not just any guitar, but the air
guitar. I want to be able to play like Barry Burns or Buzz "King
Buzzo" Osborne, or, at the very least, East Bay Ray.

Basically, I want to be able to prance around and **ROCK** the air
with my imaginary guitar.

Thanks,

Admirable goal, I suppose. What is your question?

To clarify:

How would I go about learning to play the air guitar?
Are there any online manuals, courses, or (god-forbid) late nite
videos I could mail order?

In lieu of these/or any commercially materials I will accept a
customized approach (preferably 12-step) to learn to play the air
guitar.

Thanks again,

One point of clarification:

I will give an extra generous tip for exciting air guitar tablatures
(must be specific to *air* guitar. Stringed guitar is strictly
off-limits.) Mpeg/Quicktime demonstrations will be considered.

Again, many thanks.

Golly!

I'm sorry to interrupt your dilligent research.

I just found a parody site featuring R. "Bud" Philson. Don't be fooled
by false idols. This guy is obviously a fake. Please do not reference
him or any links off the spur of the http://www.mirrorimage.com/air*
(sic.) / pages.

Thanks. If this clarification is confusing, please let me know. I am
here to help. I am mostly here to learn.

Great question! Believe it or not, there are several resources
available for you to become the next great air-guitarist.

The Philson Air Guitar appears to be one of the top brands available
for the air-guitarist and is the consumate guide for air guitar on the
web. Their homepage has a great step-by-step guide to various air
guitar maneuvers you can learn and some of the classic AG moves such
as various leaps, the "Eddie" (named after Eddie Van Halen), and more.
With illustrated finger guides, you can learn all the chords you will
need. This would be my first stop. Head over to
http://www.mirrorimage.com/air/ and rock on!

The All Austrian Air Guitar Association (AAAA) has a website that has
some great shots of the masters of the air guitar and has a video of
their recent tour that you can purchase.
http://www.airguitar.at/LG/index.htm

If, after completing the Philson course, you want to learn even more,
head on over to http://www.airguitaraustralia.com/ the home of the
Australian Air Guitar Championships. Some great moves as well as
hints on appearance, their Instruction Manual is required for any air
guitarist looking to make a move to the world stage. They also offer
qualifying rounds for the World Air Guitar Championships.

Once you have mastered your moves, get ready, cause you will be off to
the Oulu, Finland for the World Air Guitar Championships. In August
of 2002, the 7th annual Air Guitar Championships were won by Zac "Mr
Magnet" Monro of London. You can view a video of his championship
performance at the home page of the World Air Guitar Championships at
The All Austrian Air Guitar Association (AAAA) has a website that has
some great shots of the masters of the air guitar and has a video of
their recent tour that you can purchase.
http://www.airguitar.at/LG/index.htm. You have until August 27th of
2003 to get ready for this years competition.

Thanks again for letting us in on your dream and I hope that I have
been able to provide at least a little assistance in pursuing that
dream. If you need any additional clarification, please let me know
prior to rating my answer.

Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars!

I was posting my answer as you were writing your clarification.
Please disregard the references to the Philson site, though there are
some tabulatures there.

Hello, That was a great answer tar-heel. However, I was not covert
enought to secretly disclose my intention to *wallump* Mr. Magnet in
this year's competition...

I shall re-re-re-re-clarify. And of course, no hefty tip will be
spared for a stimulating (and hopefully winning) answer.

I intend to beat Mr. Magnet. What do I need to know, specifically - in
style, substance, and performance - to beat the tar of him. I warn
you, he *is* good. Maybe great. But I aim to win.

Thanks for all your hard work.

Darn it.

Another clarification:

Any site that has a background loop of "Smoke on the Water" is
automatically disqualified on principal alone... You should know
better.

Thanks.

Again, I am offering a big tip.

I have my speakers turned off so I did not realize that the bain of
all air guitar players was looping in the background on any of the
sites I recommended.

As for beating Mr. Magnet, that will be extremely difficult as he is
the two time defending world champion. Not saying it is impossible,
however, it will take a great deal of work, sweat, and possibly, yes,
even tears. But it can be done.

First off, I realized that I did not give the proper link for the Air
Guitar World Championships. You need to visit
http://www.omvf.net/en_ilmakitara.html. It is there you can view a
video file of the Champion's winning performance. It is over 6MB, so
be warned it will take awhile to download. However, that is a small
sacrifice compared to what you are going to have to do to beat him.
One thing to bear in mind is that Mr. Magnet declared last year, prior
to the finals, that he would retire if he won back-to-back titles.
The keys to winning this competition, from what I have seen and read,
accurate finger work is key. Make sure you have your songs down pat.
From there, you need to develop your signature move. Think of the
jump of Eddie Van Halen, the strut of Angus Young, the arm swing of
Pete Townsend. You need your own move that will set you apart from
the wanna-bes out there...that will make people remember you.

In revisiting the sites I listed, I realized that you were referring
to the Australian page with "Smoke on the Water", I would recommend
turning down your speakers and and still heading to their "Moves"
section. Better yet, go straight to the section at
http://www.airguitaraustralia.com/moves.htm as it will get you on the
right track with some basic, as well as advanced moves. The key to
being the man, however, is originality. There are some basics you
will need, but you have to be original. Head over to Comedy Central
and visit http://www.comedycentral.com/webshows/spot/sklars/tonight.jhtml.
Now, while this may be hosted on Comedy Central, there is no joke
about the fashion tips, the exercise regimen, and the hints and tips.
Ignore the tennis racket as that is required to effectively present
the lesson visually. The information they provide, however, is a very
good starting point.

"Contestants will be required to perform two one-minute routines with
one song of their own choice and another compulsory track.

Mr Provost said judging would be on theatrical flair and "devotion to
performance", plus the ability to demonstrate the correct fingering
for notes and chords - even without a real guitar in their hands."
Great pretenders set for clash of the air heads

You follow this advise and you will be on your way! Good luck and see
you in Finland!!!

Absolutely fabulous work, tar_heel!

I am working on my signature move now. Although it's a secret to be
unveiled at the World Championship (should I qualify) it has something
to do with a swoosh, a swirl, and a jumping man.

If you ever decide you need a change from Researcher you could be a
smashing Air Guitar Personal Coach!

Have a great weekend,
