Dear chrisward,

This website lists all new prescription drugs approved by the FDA's
Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) between 1998 and today,
with dates of approval, sorted alphabetically by product names:

U.S. Food and Drug Administration: CDER New and Generic Drug
Approvals: 1998-2003

I am only interested in new drugs i.e. new medical entities without
having to wade through a list of generic approvals or approvals for
different dosages and indications. In 2002 there were 26 new medical
entities approved , I would like the data for the previous 4 years
along with the names of the new medical entities for those years.

Dear chrisward,

You did, alas, not make that clear in your original question.
Actually, you asked explicitly for a list "of each drug approved"
during the time frame in question. That is exactly what the FDA's list
provides, so your original question has indeed been answered in every
respect.
Nevertheless, I will perform additional research and try to find the
extra information you want.

Scriptor

Dear chrisward,

As my research revealed is the correct FDA term for what you are
looking for actually not "new medical entities" but "New Molecular
Entities" (NMEs). New molecular entities are chemically unique
pharmaceuticals that have never before been marketed in the United
States in any form, irrespective of dosage or indication, so that
should be exactly what you had in mind.

You will find the FDA's NME approval lists, complete with generic
names, trade names and dates of approval, here:
