Hi,

I'm trying to find the original source (book, journal, etc.) of the
Ayahuasca recipes contained in the following three webpages:

http://www.gnosticgarden.com/articles/ayahuasca.htm

http://www.tacethno.com/info/ayahuasca/tradrecipes.txt

http://user.intersatx.net/eliot/eight_recipes.html

Seven out of the nine recipes appear below:

======================================================

Francisco Montes Shuña, Road Iquitos-Nauta, Peru. (25 years an
ayahuasquero)
12 pieces of B. Caapi, 200 leaves of Diplopterys cabrerana
"Chagropanga". The ingredients are boiled together in water for around
12 hours resulting in 750ml of Ayahuasca brew.

Jhomber Davila, Requena, Peru. (12 years an ayahuasquero)
8 pieces of Banisteriopsis caapi vine "ayahuasca" approximately 30 cm
long and 10 cm in diameter , 1 ½ leaves of Psychotria viridis
"Chacruna", 12 leaves of Brunfelsia grandiflora "Chiric sanango". All
the ingredients are boiled together in 40 liters of water for the
duration of the day. The resulting liquid is reduced down to 1 ½
liters of Ayahuasca drink.

Jose Padilla, Iquitos, Peru. (52 years an ayahuasquero)
1 Kg (fresh weight) of B. Caapi vine, 50 leaves of P.viridis. The
ingredients are boiled in 25-30 liters of water for 2 hours, the
extract is then poured into another container and more water is added
to the original herbs for another decoction lasting 2 ½ hours. This
process is repeated one more time before all the extracts are then
combined and evaporated on a low fire until 1 ½ liters of Ayahuasca
drink remain. In all the entire process takes 12 hours.

Luis Culquiton, Manacamari, Nanay river, Peru. (20 years an
ayahuasquero)
3 Kg of B. Caapi vine, 1 Kg of P. viridis leaves (both fresh weight),
200 grams of fresh bark of Tabebuia sp. "tahuari". The plants are
boiled together for approximately 8 hours and then the resulting
concoction is reduced to obtain 1 liter of Ayahuasca drink.

Norma Panduro, Iquitos, Peru. (38 years an ayahuasquero)
3 ½ Kg (fresh weight) of Banisteriopsis caapi vine "ayahuasca", ½ Kg
of Psychotria viridis leaves "chacruna", 3 leaves of Brugmansia
suaveolens "Toe", 4 flowers of Calliandra angustifolia "Bobinzana",
10-20 leaves of Nicotiana tabacum "tabaco". Also added are 5-10 drops
of perfume, presumably for scent/taste purposes only. The mixture is
boiled for a total of 12 hours during preparation.

Ruperto Peña, Road Iquitos-Nauta, Peru. (35 years an ayahuasquero)
12 pieces of B. Caapi, 200 leaves of Diplopterys cabrerana "huambisa",
4-5 leaves of Jatropha curcas "Piñon colorado" and 3 leaves of
Dieffenbachia spp. "Patiquina". The ingredients are decocted together
for 12 hours and reduced down to 1 bottle (750 ml) of Ayahuasca brew.

Solom Tello, Iquitos, Peru. (50 years an ayahuasquero)
30-40 pieces of B. Caapi vine, 200-300 of P. viridis leaves, some
Mansoa alliasea "Ajos sacha", Petiveria alliacea "Mucura" and Piper
sp. "Guayusa". Three separate extractions are performed on the herb
material, which are then combined and reduced to leave 1 ½ liters of
Ayahuasca drink.

======================================================

The first site cannot be the original source as it contains only seven
of the full list of nine. I have emailled the other two sites, one
said they couldn't remember where they got the information from, the
other said that they had been told the information (although for some
reason, I was disinclined to believe them).

I assume the information comes from one of the sources quoted at the
bottom of the page -
http://www.gnosticgarden.com/articles/ayahuasca.htm , but as yet I
have not been able to work out exactly which reference is applicable.

Thanks,

Robert Hill

This is only a guess so I am placing it in the Comments section.
Shultes seems to have written more volumes available to the public on
these plants - see http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/002-2701499-4792802
for a list of his books (and ones by other authors on the subject). I
examined some of the ones offering Table of Contents information but
saw no reference to formulas or recipes.

Good luck on your quest.

I know for sure that the recipes do not come from either of the R. E.
Shultes books, "Plants of the Gods", or "Vine of the Soul". As for his
other books, as yet I do not know.

I did a 30 day ayahuasca diet in Peru whilst making a channel 4
programme...the only thing I had to read was my own loony diary and a
paperback on ayahuasca in Spanish - these recipes read very much like
a translation of two pages in that

phrases like "35 years an ayahuasquero" sound very translated to me

unfortunately i cant check this as i have lent the book to a cambridge
academic...so it's possible i hallucinated the whole thing ; )

keep nagging me via my website piersgibbon.com - i'd like to get the
book back anyway so you'll be doing me a favour

best
Piers Gibbon
