Rather than point you back at our previous questions for explanations
of the ingredients, I’m going to break it all down here for you, since
your query focuses on this conditioner in particular.

**Aqueous Extracts – extracts mixed with purified water. These
extracts are from:

**Lavender – from the lavender flower. Lavender has long been used
for it’s soothing, anti-inflammatory properties. Gently stimulates
the scalp and soothes irritations

**Peppermint – a natural astringent and stimulant. Peppermint soothes
itching, stimulates scalp (which in turn increases blood flow to the
scalp, encouraging hair growth), and encourages healing of abrasions
and irritations.

**Rosemary – a natural stimulant and antiseptic. Rosemary increases
circulation to the scalp and follicles and is said to help combat
premature baldness.

It’s also worth noting that these herbs are organically grown, meaning
they are grown without the use of chemical additives to the soil or
chemical pesticides. This helps ensure that you’re getting ONLY the
restorative properties of these herbs, without the added surprise of
icky chemical residue.

**Cetyl Alcohol (Coconut Source) – an emulsifier, derived from
coconut. Also used for thickening. Non-drying.

**Glyceryl Stearate (Coconut Source) – an emollient (skin softener)

to nourish the hair.

**Hydrolyzed Brazil Nut Protein – proteins derived from the Brazil
Nut, used to increase hair’s strength and elasticity. Used as a
replacement for keratin, also offers some moisturizing properties.
(Use of this ingredient instead of keratin, an animal product, is not
only in line with Aveda’s philosophy of environmental responsibility
and conservation, it also fits well with Nioxin Labs’ admonition to
avoid animal by-products in your hair care routine!)

As you can see, the Aveda Shampure conditioner is comprised of
ingredients that are not derived from animals. Extracts of
organically grown herbs Peppermint, Rosemary and Lavender are included
in this formula to soothe and protect roughed up hair and scalp, and
increase scalp circulation. As mentioned previously, good scalp
circulation stimulates hair follicles, encouraging hair growth and
retention. Rosemary is considered to be a good natural deterrent to
hair loss, in addition to being a fine circulation stimulator.

In a previous answer, we discussed the Nioxin Labs philosophy towards
hair rentention:

“You need to select cleansers, conditioners, treatments, supplements
and styling products that contain bionutrients like vitamins, proteins
and amino acids. These provide the nourishment living hair and skin
need to be healthy. Avoid products with sticky animal proteins,
polymers, plastics, resins, alcohol, or that claim to “volumize” the
hair. They may help you achieve the look you seek, but they can also
build up on the scalp and block the hair follicle.”

An Educated Look into the Causes of Hair Loss – pp.24 –25
Nioxin Research Laboratories, 2001

The Aveda Shampure conditioner does a wonderful job of following this
philosophy – not a single animal product is found in this formula, and
the inclusion of bio-nutritives such as Panthenol (pro-vitamin B-5),
Hydrolized Wheat and Brazil Nut proteins and Wheat amino acids make
this conditioner a good choice for lightweight, but effective
conditioning. Your hair and scalp will be moisturized and protected,
and your hair will be “fed” by the inclusion of these nourishing
ingredients, making it stronger and encouraging it to stay with you
longer.

In addition to their scalp stimulating properties, the included herbal
extracts promote a feeling of relaxation (this is from the lavender,
long used for “sleep sachets”) and well being, a nice side effect of
using botanical products instead of those derived from animal
products.

Perhaps you might enjoy a consultation with a specialist in one of
Aveda’s Concept Salons? These salons specialize in botanical hair
care that is soothing and gentle, and follow Aveda’s philosophy of
natural and safe hair care. Aveda products are non-irritating and
non-allergenic, 100% botanical, and never, ever animal tested. The
stylists are well trained and very capable of helping you with a
gentle hair care routine, and probably know a few tricks to help you
keep your hair without resorting to harsh chemicals.

I found an Aveda Concept Salon for you in Boston, if you’re inclined
to give one a try (I think you’d really enjoy the pampering – scalp
massages are very good for scalp circulation, too!):

I hope this has been a good explanation for you! As ever, if you have
any questions or need me to explain something I might have been
unclear about, just ask for a clarification and I’ll be glad to help
you!

Hi there!

I suppose that depends on what you mean by "too much". Using a whole
bottle at once? Well, that's probably too much, and you're likely to
just get all slippery and fall down in your shower and rap your head.
(Please don't do that. It hurts!) More than once a day? I don't
know about that being "too much" so much as just not necessary.

Your hair can only absorb so much of anything at any given time.
Think of your hair like a sponge. You can dip a big sponge in a
bucket of water, but that sponge is only going to soak up so much, and
then it's just going to stop. To get that sponge to soak up more, you
have to squeeze out what you've already soaked up. Doing that doesn't
mean that the sponge is getting extra benefits by soaking up some
more, it's just replacing what was squeezed out.

Using this conditioner once a day is sufficient - any more than that
and you're effectively just pouring your conditioner (and your money)
down your shower drain. It won't hurt you to use it more than once a
day, but it's not going to offer any extra benefits either.

In this case (as with most hair care products), more is not better.
It's just...more.
