Hi! Thanks for the question.

The Ariel name is of Hebrew origin. It means primarily as "lion of
God" or "fryer of God". It is a name given for boys.

"BabyWatch name page for ariel"
http://www.babywatch.biz/namesuk/a/ariel.html

"Ariel"
http://www.americanbaby.com/ab/CDA/baby_names_detail/0,1745,11549,00.html

I also found this name from the Hebrew Bible Dictionary.

"the same as ''ariy'el' (739); Ariel, a symbolical name for Jerusalem,
also the name of an Israelite:--Ariel.

"701 ('Arbiy) to 800 ('eshshah)"
http://www.sacrednamebible.com/kjvstrongs/STRHEB7.htm#S739

In reference to the Archangel Ariel, here is what I found.

"Archangel Ariel's name means, "Lion of God." He is the Keeper of the
Sacred Wisdom and is the Angel of the Earth. Ariel is usually
depicted as a serious-faced man of mature years with flowing silver
hair and violet eyes. He wears a cloak of rainbow colors that flash
and glow in his aura."

"THE HIERARCHY OF ANGELS"
http://www.healinghandsoflight.homestead.com/The_Hierarchy_Of_Angels.html

"According to the Dictionary of Angels, and the book "Angels A to Z",
Ariel or the Archangel Ariel has quite a storied past in Earth legend
and esoteric writings."

"First, the name "Ariel" is Hebrew and means "Lion of God". In
Sumeria, Ariel was depicted as a male diety with the head of a lion.
In the Kabbala, the Jewish mystics ascribed the name Ariel to be the
hidden, or poetic name for the city of Jerusalem. Some of the Gnostic
texts define Ariel as a "controller of demons", holding power over the
lower astral realms. Other sources identify Ariel as being strongly
associated with the Devic kingdoms, and also as a "Guardian of, and
Lord of the Earth". Ariel is also believed to work with Archangel
Raphael in the healing arts. Some have conjectured that Ariel is the
"feminine" aspect of Uriel, one of the four main Archangels before the
Throne of God."

Yes thanks to the comment I was able to see my error in the spelling.
It should be "fyer of God" not "fryer of God". However, I will still
put this up since this is the true content of the website.

As stated above, Ariel means lion (ari) of God (El).

However, one statement above is simply wrong. Ariel does not mean
"fryer of God". Nothing does -- "fryer of God" is a nonsensical
phrase. In fact, the URL it supposedly came from
<http://www.babywatch.biz/namesuk/a/ariel.html> doesn't say it! It
does say "fyer of God," which Easterangel-ga misread as fryer. But a
quick look at that page reveals that the author is not very good at
English. He or she just misspelled "fire."

Can Ariel mean "fire of God"? Not exactly. The Hebrew and English
Lexicon of the Old Testament, by William Gesenius (as opposed to
Strong's Hebrew Dictionary, cited above) lists, as a second definition
for Ariel (after "lion of God"), "hearth, i.e. altar of God." He cites
Ezekiel 43:15-16, where the word Ariel (with a variant spelling) is
used to refer to the altar of burnt-offerings.

So Ariel can mean altar of God. But "fire of God" is the translation
of a different name -- the archangel Uriel.
