I want to find a painting from the series that this Haitian artist
painted about 20 years ago.. (I had one and it was stolen) Alix Roy
painted ladies made out of tropical fruits. The paintings had the fruit
(ladies) inside about 6 boxes. the boxes are framed in red. I bought
my original painting from the Marassa Gallery in Petionville, a
district of Port-au-Prince. These fruit ladies are done in great
detail. It is possible that an art dealer in Miami may know something
about the wear-abouts of Mr. Roy or where a painting from this series
can be
acquired. Thanking you in advance for any efforts as the loss of this
painting
has greatly saddened me.. |

Hello babymargot-ga,
I have been working on your question and have sent e-mails to a number
of art galleries inquiring about the paintings and for contact
information for Alix Roy.
Alix Roy was born in 1930 in Port-au-Prince. He studied at St. Louis
de Gonzague and the Louis Hall Institute. Noted artists Luce Turnier,
Maurice Borno and Lucien Price tutored him. Later he became a
draftsman for UNICEF in Haiti.
In 1956 he traveled to New York to work on perfecting his painting
technique. At various times he also lived in the Dominican Republic
and Puerto Rico.
Here are the paintings that I located:
This painting is similar to what you are seeking because of the boxes.
Alix Roy - Fruits & Vegetables II
17x19 inches (43x48 cm)
$2,950

I really dont know when I will receive answers to the email inquiries
that I sent out to the galleries that carry the above paintings.
However if you are interested in these paintings, I could post the
leads (name of art gallery, address, phone number, web page, and
email) as the official answer at the present time if you desire.
Best Regards,

Dear Bobbie7-ga: I am aware of the Fruits & Vegetables II that you so
kindly sent. The series that I am talking about is probably
earlier. They are only fruits, Fruit Ladies, much more detailed and
they are in RED boxes. You are on the right
track. Please keep trying...I am heartbroken over my loss and am
determined to find the series again. I once met a well-known Haitian
painter (Edouard Duval-Carrie) who had been given 3 of this series by
the artist, himself but unfortunately he was unwilling (understandably
so.) to part with even one.

Hi Bobbie7-ga... Listen,a few years ago I tried to contact Gallerie
Marassa in Petionville, Port-au-Prince, where I bought my painting
originally. I also was hoping that Gallerie Monin could give some
information. I was not able to get to him through them but perhaps you
will have better luck now...If you do speak to Gallerie Marassa (they
may be on the net..??)maybe it would help to tell them that I bought
my painting from them.. Supposedly Mr. Roy is living in a place called
Petit Goave...

Bill Bollendorf from Galerie Macondo just answered the following:
"Sorry to say I do not know how to contact Alix Roy. Occasionally
people do send me photos of paintings that they wish to sell, which I
keep on file. I have nothing by Alix Roy at the moment but If
something comes in I will certainly let you know. Thanks for
contacting me. BB"

Hey Bobbie7-ga... What's going on? It seems that only one person has
sent you an answer... I'm discouraged... Hope that I get some good
news. Take care.

Listen Bobbie7-ga ... just a thought that may have occurred to you..
Remember the paintings that you asked me about (if I was interested in
them etc.) Well.. if these people are selling Mr. Roy's paintings they
must be able to get in contact with Mr. Roy. They must pay him if the
painting(s) is (are)sold. Don't you think so? Therefore they should
know where he... (ie. address, telephone number etc.) Also remember
that he supposedly is living in a place called Petit Goave.

Hi
I have already sent e-mail inquires to the galleries that sell his
paintings.
Please check the response from Haitian Paintings dated in my
clarification dated Feb 2. They carry his painting and have no further
information.
Sometimes a gallery may sell a painting that belongs to an indivual
and not directly from the artist.
Another gallery is on vacation and will reopen on February 12.

Hi Babymargot,
I have not found an email address for Gallerie Monin or Gallerie
Marassa yet.
I do have the telephone number for Gallerie Marassa but I am hesitant
to call because of the elevated costs of international calls from
where I live.
I resent an email to one of the galleries that sells his work. I hope
to have better news tomorrow.

Good afternoon Babymargot,
Katie Barr from the Haitian Art Collection wrote:

"The Alix Roy was listed for a short time on our old site, it was part
of a private collection and is no longer available. At the present

Haitian Art was the gallery that carried the painting Dress-up.
I will keep you updated if anything else comes in.
