I've tried just about everything to get our dedicated half-life cs
server onto the WON network. I've conducted a lot of searches on
google and google groups and no good so far.

I've verified that when HLDS.exe starts up theres a "WON Auth Server"
message. I also see the 3 setmaster lines in the hlds console.

I installed gamespy and verified that i can update the listings of the
WON east coast master server.

My server is running hlds 4.1.1.0 and counterstrike 1.5 on windows
server 2003 on a intel p4 2.2 with 512mb of ram.

Is the server in question running behind a firewall at a school or
company? Do you have to use a proxy server to access websites from
the machine (sort of a way to check for the first question)?

Sorry, I forgot to mention. The server is running with direct access
to the Internet. No proxies or firewalls. The server has multiple
IPs and I have bounded the hlds to a single IP.

You said: "I installed gamespy and verified that i can update the
listings of the WON east coast master server." ... Does this mean that
your server gets listed on one of the WON servers but not the others,
or that the gamespy client can fetch the server lists?

Anyway, the "WON Auth Server", followed by a lot of resource loading
and "Adding Master Server" lines indicate that there is nothing
fundamentally wrong. Essentially, HLDS was able to talk to the server.
However, if it supplied a local or misconfigured IP address, you will
not recieve a warning message. It would be nice if WON notified you
that your server wouldn't be listed.... but it won't. Note that you
are not trying to bind to what your server considers a non-bindable
port, or it would have given you an error message to that effect.

Just in case (never know....):
Make sure you are specifying the mod you are trying to serve, and
specify a map to start with. In this case, "hlds -game cstrike +map
de_dust +ip your.ip.numbers.here " should work.

Strong reccomendation: Try using another mod for troubleshooting
purposes, such as Natural Selection or Team Fortress Classic. Go to
the multiplayer menu and filter the game type to "ns" or "tfc". This
step alone should shave off several minutes for each test.

The most likely problem, assuming everything else about the HLDS
server is fine, is IP misconfiguration. Type "status" in the hlds
console to find the IP address that the server is bound to (if you are
using +IP, this shouldn't be an issue). Then open a command prompt
(start->run "command") and type "ipconfig" and look for "IP address"
(as opposed to "autoconfiguration IP address").
------------
As a last ditch effort, try testing HLDS locally. To do this, you'll
have to move the main HLDS port before connecting. Append "-port
27016" to the HLDS command line, and from the CS console use "connect
i.p.a.d:27016". Maybe it'll shed a light on stuff.

Good luck.

rahga_-ga,

Thanks for your suggestions. What I meant was I could update the
server lists (both half-life.east.won.net & half-life.west.won.net)
without problems using gamespy. My server does not appear on any WON
lists.

As for the IPs, the server is configured to use multiple Internet IPs
and I have bounded it to an actual IP. I verified that the HLDS is
only listening on that ip using netstat -an. Ive also verified that
clients are able to connect and play w/o any problems to that IP and
only that IP (ie: none of the other IPs the server is configured
with).

I've also tried the following configurations:
- clean install of HLDS 4110 w/cs1.5 (plain vanilla) -> does not go on
WON
- clean install of Full version of Half-Life and patching client to
1110 and cs to 1.5 -> does not go on WON
- using TFC as a mod w/no configuration other than loading the basic
map -> does not go on WON
- added gamespy's master to the master list and it shows up fine in
gamespy's master list but not WON's
- tried switching it to use other IPs assigned to the server...no
effect

I've just now ran a packet sniffer on the data and I see that the WON
master server does send back a reply after my challenge request:

raw data to ---> WON master 198.74.33.62:27010
0
\protocol\46\challenge\835529354\players\0\max\20\gamedir\cstrike\map\as_oilrig\type\d\password\0\os\w\secure\1\lan\0\version\4.1.1.0

raw data from <--- WON master (in hex)
FF FF FF FF 73 0A 8A 2A CD 31

I'm not sure how to interpret the response from the WON master or if
there are any references to what the hex values are offsets for.

My HLDS command line is as follows:
-game cstrike -noipx -port 27015 +ip 64.5.33.19 +exec server.cfg
+maxplayers 20 +map cs_italy

Please let me know if you or anyone have any additional suggestions.

Thanks,
rewobo

Clarification: By "WON lists", are you referring to the lists
downloaded from the ingame browser?

Using the ingame browser, I disabled all filtering options and snarfed
down a list of 32,000 half-life servers, canceled the "Requesting
Server Information" process to save several hours of my time, scrolled
down to your IP, and successfully did a "View Game Info" (same thing
as "Requesting Server Information", but for only a single IP). Results
were positive: http://www.rahga.com/fun/browser.jpg .....

If you meant something else by "WON lists", let me know, and I may be
able to help more.... aside from waiting on the "Requesting Server
Information" process for the remaining 29,000 servers at this point,
which will probably take all night. :)

Wow, that's interesting. We've just tried the ingame browser and we
see our server too with filters off. Similar to your picture, we see
a lot of servers on our subnet. What I meant by 'WON lists' is for
GameSpy 3D (www.gamespy3d.com), there's a master server list entry for
"WON Master" with an address of half-life.east.won.net:27010. That
only shows about 200-270 servers.

Personally, I've always thought that it was strange that with so many
counterstrike servers, and with all of them having WON as default
master, it seemed odd that there would only be 200 something servers
showing up in the WON Master list on gamespy.

Now I'm thinking either the WON master list retrieved using gamespy
has a predetermined set of filters or is based on server activity
("must be active for 2 weeks with 80% capacity overall" or something).
Though if it were based on filters, I would've assumed something like
nonempty, active. Some of these servers on Gamespy's WON Master list
are dead, some are empty....doesn't make much sense.

I guess my question now is how someone would get their server onto
gamespy3d's won master list even though the address of the master
appears to be the same as the ingame browser.

Thank you for all your help so far rahga, it has given us some insight
into the problem.
