My question is about a new movie. I saw this less than 6 months ago
and it was newly released then. it was a movie about some rich kids
(drug dealer, 3rd guy, carefree virgin) in a college in new england.
it was based on a book. one of the kids wasn't exactly rich and dealt
drugs to pay his way. one of the kids had a mercedes that was driven
recklessly in one
scene. one of the kids nearly dies of an overdose and is taken to the
hospital. the drug dealer was nearly killed by his (mob?) boss. the
movie ends with the drug dealer riding away from the school on his
motorbike. there is a 3 way love interest with the guy (drug
dealer/protagonist) lusting after a girl who is a carefree virgin who
has sex with some stranger, the girl has a roommate who marries a
senator and has 4 kids eventually. and theres a 3rd guy who is in love
with the drug dealer and the story is all about frustrated passions
all around. the 3rd guys mother does painkillers. the drug dealer and
the 3rd guy watch
straight porn together. the drug dealer barely acknowledges the
existence of the 3rd guy. the carefree virgin blows her professor.
there's the girls boyfriend who took a trip through europe. the movie
is shot in a VERY fragmented artisitc kinda way (as you can probably
tell through my question). it is fairly cold and there is al ot of
snow towards the end of the movie. If anyone saw this movie these are
probably enough details to trigger a memory.my question is what is the
name of
the movie and the book it was based on?

i hope that there are sufficient triggers in the q but just in
case....dru gdealer lusts after carefree virgin becuase he gets motes
from 'pathetic girl' who writes him beautiful love letters. she
commits suicide by slitting her wrists in a bath (after being
disillusioned by drug dealer) and is discovered by carefree virgin.

Hello.

I believe that you're looking for "The Rules of Attraction" (2002).
Various reviews mention all of the elements you describe (i.e., the
drug dealer, the mother on painkillers, the character who takes a trip
to Europe, etc.)

See Rottentomatoes.com:

The book is by Bret Easton Ellis. It's available from Amazon.com:

search strategy: college, "drug dealer", movie, review, overdose, etc.

I hope this helps.
