Erland Echlin was a Canadian journalist who worked in London during
WW2.

Together with a colleague and their secretary, he was interned under
Defence Regulation 18B in 1940 allegedly because of official fears
that he was about to 'tell the truth' about the Tyler Kent affair.

Previously, he had worked in the Balkans and for Time magazine.

Anybody?

Hi probonopublico:

A quick search for "Erland Echlin" found an interesting article on
this journalist's part in the 13-month calendar debate. Yes, in the
20's and 30's, some people (mainly accountants) were fighting for the
implementation of a 13-month calendar (each month with 4 weeks).

The following document on this issue mentions Echlin twice:

Achelis: A Story Worth Remembering in Accounting
http://www.deakin.edu.au/wcah/papers/Higgins.pdf

"Erland Echlin, (1933) a Canadian journalist, stated that Canada would
not be a supporter of the 13-month calendar in the future and that, in
1931, Canada was strongly swayed by the arguments of George Eastman
(pp. 129-130)."

"Erland Echlin, 1934) by then a foreign press correspondent in
Germany,
noted the opposition of Chancellor Hitler to the 13-month plan."

The following page also give more details on the Tyler-Kent affair as
well:

This seems to constitute "more stuff" to me. Do I win the bet? :-)

Thanks.

Oh, and accorin to the bibliography of the 13-month calendar article,
Echlin wrote a paper about this debate for the "Journal of Calendar
Reform":

Echlin, Erland, “Canada and the Calendar,” Journal of Calendar Reform,
vol. 3., no. 4, December, 1933, pp. 129-131.

Not bad for a start.

I didn't know about the 13 month calendar stuff.

However, as State Secrets is MY SITE, I would have hoped that you
could have discovered some other stuff that was new to me.

Or have you exhausted your enquiries?

Kindest regards

Bryan

Hi probonopublico:

That was all I was able to find using Google. I will expand my search
to a few other places later today and let you know what, if anything,
else I can find.

Thanks.

Hi probonopublico:

Well, I spent another couple of hours looking for more on the elusive
Mr. Echlin, but was unable to come up with anything...

If I come up with any other bright ideas on where to look, I certainly
will let you know...this one's bugging me now as much as you. :-)
